Suggestions on stimulants and/or nootropics

Posted by DSCH on August 3, 2003, at 18:40:12

I have been taking pemoline for 2 weeks now. My symptom profile includes lack of motivation, hypersomnia (with lots of REM), slowed speach and possibly mental function in general, and sluggish involuntary reflexes. So far, all I've really noticed is some reduction in the amount of sleep I feel I need as well as reduced grogginess upon waking. While helpful this isn't exactly overwhelming and its coming with the risk of liver damage down the road. I will be making an appointment to see my GP MD soon and would like to have some input from folks who have battled these problems or have knowledge regarding what might be causing this. Could nootropics be a vaible alternative to stimulants?

Provigil I have tried before. Mild benefit from it for wakefulness during the day. I don't remember if it made me feel better upon wakening. I'm not familiar with the others.

I've also taken Wellbutrin and didn't notice anything from it at all.

I have similar problems (except for the slow reflexes) most stimulants have helped with wakefulness, but they eventually stop working.

So now I am on strattera - this is not a stimulant but has stimulating effects. It is also said to have anti-depression effects which I did notice after about 2 weeks. So I am still on it. It no longer seems to help with my being sleepy during the day. Perhaps a dosage increase is what I need. I'm currently on 40mg.
(Note intitially some people do feel a bit spacy on it, but it wears off).

Deprenyl is an MAO-B inhibitor that increases concentrations of dopamine and some other neurotransmitters (acetylcholine being one of those, I believe). The others, as well as many other supplements you may find quite useful, are very well explained in the online book, "Mind Boosters: A Guide to Natural Supplements That Enhance Your Mind, Memory, and Mood":

Interesting, an NRI marketed for ADHD rather than depression.

I will ask him about low dose Deprenyl/selegiline in the MAO-B operating range (10 mg or less) along with a supplement. I take it phenylalanine is the most popular one to go with Deprenyl/selegiline? I might ask him about the *cetams just to see what he was to say about stuff that isn't on FDA radar screens these days.

selegiline + pemoline + memantine... Jean Paul?

An interesting older post. Is Jean Paul from Argentina still around?

His combo: selegiline (2.5 mg), pemoline (37.5 mg), and memantine (20 mg). It was pushing the upper limit of stimulation for him.

Will ask GP MD about suppliments to boost pemoline

Ouch, memantine is expensive. And I can only imagine what alarm bells would go off if I brought up adding a MAOI to a pstim (even though seligiline is MAO-B at low dose).

Since it has only been two weeks on the pemoline, and I have noticed modest benefits from it, I will ask him first about vitamin and amino acid supplements. If more dopamine is what I need, then its precursors and enzymes look like a good place to start.
