Abilify and Akathisia????

Posted by TomG on July 22, 2003, at 20:13:48

I've been on 15mg for a little over a week now. I can't tell any positive benefits, but I feel like I'm coming out of my skin and I am really uncomfortable. I think I have the akathisia that is indicated as a side effect. I've been taking Benadryl to counter act this but it seems to be taking more and more to get rid of the restlessness. Has anyone else experienced this like having the Benadryl poop on you. I heard a beta blocker would work on the akathisia. Called my doc today and he wouldn't prescribe propanolol. I want to try and stick it out. Has anyone had this akathisia and have it go away by itself. How long will this last? I thought I couldn't get anymore nuts than I already am!!!!

What was his reasoning behind not prescribing propanolol?

Benzodiazepines are another option. Also, Amantadine works for some.

I have had akathisia on every neuroleptic I have been on (Haldol, Seroquel, Geodon, and Abilify - although it was the least on Abilify). The only thing that really helped me was a high dose of propanolol.

Gawd yes. It is awful, isn't it? I'm on cogentin now. That seems to help. Benadryl didn't help much but put me to sleep. I already took klonipin and had to increase the dose. I tried Propanolol (even tho my doc said it wouldn't work) and it didn't work. Cogentin helps but dries out my mouth completely. I only take one-quarter 15mg tablet every other day to reduce the akathesia. It seems to get worse for several weeks then plateau...I've seen no evidence in my own experience that akathesia improves on its own.

My doctor's nurse said that he didn't know what else to do except lower the dose. The propanolol was my idea. So I guess he is not familiar in treating this and didn't care to listen to my idea. Did the Abilify kick in for you even though you had the akathisia?

Yes, it worked. But I decided to go off of it because I couldn't stand the restlessness.

It only took about a week for Abilify to work for me, but most do work quickly for me.

The akathisia went away in about two days.
