I've never heard of this, but I will do some research. If anyone find out anything I am very interested.

This is very interesting, even more so since I've just started a dopamine antagonist- Zyprexa. I havent actually heard of this hypothesis, but I have heard that derealization and depersonalization symptoms result from excessive stimulation of the 5-HT2 receptor. This is why Lamotrigine is used- often with good results. I must say my experience is consistent with this: when I added Lithium to my Nardil after a while derealization got real bad- Lithium increases serotonin. But with the dopamine thing, I'm exploring it. If Zyprexa doesn't work (for my OCD and only a bit remaing derealization after Nardil knocked it in the head) I will then go on to dopamine agonists- 1. Mirapex, 2. Bromocriptine, and more I will research.
Good luck to you!

Do you have any studies supporting the 5-HT2A hypothesis? I would be interested in any sources citing lamictal as acting on 5-HT2A as well as I have done quite a bit of research on the drug and have not come accross it. If you have problems similar to mine, you might try lamictal if you haven't. I got 100% amelioration of all of my symptoms for a few weeks on it and then it pooped out. I have been trying to no end to determine what mode of action might have caused such a robust response. Thanks!

So you had total relief from derealization when you took Lamictal :) I am very glad to hear this and I will discuss this with my pdoc :)))
May I ask what caused your derealization? Mine started with the first panic attack, and I've found about 75% relief since I began taking Wellbutrin. Maybe I need a small dose of Lamictal to get rid of the remaining 25%.....

mine started with a panic attack that turned into constant GAD. I have now since been dxed BPII. Lithium has helped. Lamictal knocked out all my problems the first day i took it. It gradually pooped out even with dosage increases and then seemed to cause a toxic reaction.

What dosage of Lamictal did you begin with, and please explain about the toxic reaction? I'm looking forward to Monday, so that I can discuss taking a low dosage of this med. to see if it helps with my derealization.
God Bless

Dave, I just posted the same question. Like yourself Ativan seems to help me, but I only take about .25mg a day. I'm also taking Wellbutrin which has helped with about 75% of the derealization.
I pray that we get some answers.
