augmentation question

Posted by jay beck on June 25, 2003, at 20:26:33

hey, i got a question. I was wondering what meds are out there to use with SSRIs, im on lexapro its worked fairly good as an anti-depresant but has only slightly lessened my anxiety. I just quit using wellbutrin, i guess it didnt react well with me. I still have a slight deppresion and anxiety and i really dont think i could tolerate an increase of ssri.

o ya, they wont prescibe me ANYTHING abusable because im a former drug addict.

im diagnosed with major deppresion, social anxiety and ADD. im also fairly paranoid but I HATE zombie pills (anti-psychotics).

any suggestions?

Jay,
See my post on Tryptophan and DLPA. There are some books on both, and the only personal experience that I have is what I wrote here. I used to work in a health food store, back in the early 80's, and people did have good reports on both, but then I only saw and spoke to those who came back fairly often.
Good luck,
Dee.

jay beck:

Since benzos are out of the question because they are considered "dependency producing" (not my personal belief), then maybe you could try augmenting with BuSpar. It helps to squeeze out the AD effects of SSRIs while lowering general anxiety. I take a throwaway dose of Buspar at 10mg along with 75mgs of Zoloft and it has been a really effective combination for depression and anxiety. Buspar takes 3-4 weeks to work but hey, you can stop at any time (no withdrawal) and there's no so-called addictive potential!

Buspar...might be good idea, i tried buspar alone a while ago. it didnt really do much for me but in a combo it could be diffrent. I think i got slightly lightheaded and stinky hehe. i could deal with it if it works tho (extra deoderant)

Let's see... Buspar, Neurontin, Gabitril, Vistaril are all considered "non-abusable" I believe, and could help.

Perhaps a sedating tricylic with serotonergic activity would be better than an SSRI? You could switch to amitryptiline or clomipramine. Just a thought.

You could also try some natural remedies, like niacinamide and/or magnesium.

Yeah, Pindolol (a.k.a. Visken) it's a good augmentation drug. Beta blocker, works for me.
