First Day of Concerta; Any advice?

Posted by glaciergirl on May 20, 2003, at 7:52:57

Hi all...well after two weeks of strattera, my doc is switching me to concerta. She is starting me on 36mg a day. Is anyone on this board currently taking concerta? It's only been a couple of hours since I took it and I am REALLY hoping for something good to come out of this! So far, my stomach has been a little upset and my coffee did not taste good....I can live with that!! I'm on my way to work so I'll see how it goes....my doc said this was a type of ritalin or a stimulant so it should work immediately, right? After taking Paxil CR, Topamax, and Strattera, I am willing to try anything that will not give me bad side effects ~ Any advise would be appreciated! Thanks,
Brooke

It is Ritalin plain old Ritalin, just with a sophisticated delivery device. It is a much smoother dose than going up and down all day on the 20mg Ritalin tablets. Are you taking it for ADD or Depression or both, what? No advice for you really, you may need to drink lots of water. You may feel used up at the end of the day when it wears off. It is pure speed. It has some speedy side effects but it is good for some people. The nice thing is it doesn't take six weeks to effect you, or three months to evaluate and another six weeks to leave your system. I have used it for several years. It helps me concentrate lifts my mood. If I have to do anything that makes me sweat, I pour. I can't think of any ugly side effects. I have never abused it though.

WHEW! I was beginning to wonder if anyone else was on Concerta. Today is my fourth day on it and so far it is better than anything else I've tried. (I was diagnosed with ADHD...am 28 yrs old.) I have been like a new person at work! Actually doing what my boss asks me to do the minute she asks me to do it, instead of putting it aside and letting it sit in a drawer until I either forget about it, or it gets lost! I started opening my mail instead of setting it aside (just like the stuff at work!!) Concerta is much better than the Strattera...Strattera was making me less motivated to do anything...I didn't wash clothes for the whole two weeks I was on it. (Terrible, I know!) Anyway, Thanks for your input. I haven't noticed any side effects yet...my coffee is tasting normal again, I have less of an appitite (YEAH!!) and am hoping it will help me lose a few pounds! All in all, I am happy...do you ever skip it on the weekends, or take a break from it to keep it working?? Thanks again, Brooke

I take breaks from it all the time probably more than I should. I have noticed in myself a tendency to take as little of any med as I can. I need to be reminded sometimes that I need these meds. I told a doctor recently that I ocasionally abuse Ritalin by taking it before poker games because it helps me to win. He said, "no that is called the ability to concentrate. thats what its for". The same holds true for AD's I'm alway subtlety titrating my doses until, wham! I get hit with depression again. I don't know why I do that.
