You sound just like I did 3 months ago....terrible side effects and wondering what was I doing!!! Got MORE anxious and depressed befor it got better. Took 9 weeks befor I had an indication Lex was going to work. Now I am glad I stuck with it...have not had an anxiety attack or depressive episode in a while. Also have not had any more custiomer complaints at work and have not had a screaming fight w/hubby, all of which were ruining my life befor Lex.

Hang in there and give it a chance to work for you too!!

Best of luck to you and all the rest of us, we're all in this together.

I am taking Wellbutrin (300mg daily) and Lexapro (20mg daily) at the same time also. I don't feel that awful but seem way too tired. I do know that when I decided to stop Paxil I felt TERRIBLE. I would wake up in the middle of the night with the sheets soaking wet from sweating so much. And had really weird dreams. I did read in the newspaper about a man suing the manufacturer due to similar side effects when discontinuing Paxil. Manufacturer claims Paxil is not habit or addictive forming. But I did experience a lot of what you just described, along with sort of a feeling of electricity moving thru my body. Almost like withdrawal systems from the Paxil. It did slowly cease and go away for me. Does anyone know if my extreme tiredness is because I am taking the Wellbutrin and Lexapro together at the very same time (same glass of water LOL). Should I seperate them and take each at different times? Did not have this problem when on Wellbutrin only. Not sure which, if I do seperate, I should take in the am and which one to take in the pm. Any suggestions???

Best time of day to take Lex seems to vary by individual...I started taking it in the morning but found I was falling asleep just after dinner. Now I take it at 2-3PM and I don't get sleepy until 11PM my usual bedtime. Other people have posted that they take it right befor bed. I think it's a trail and error thing, try different times until you find what works best for you.

I take 20 mg. Adderall with 150 mg. of Wellbutrin at about 7:00 a.m. (both of these have stimulating actions which I definitely need during the daytime hours).

Another 20 mg. of Adderall at noon.

I've found that taking the Lexapro in the later evening seems to work best for me (taking it in the morning - even with Adderall) left me feeling zombie-like.

Then, around 11:00 or earlier I take Ambien.

Most side effects go away with time. I know you have a lot going on with school. A benxo such as xanax or klonopin may help but you dont want to take to much or get hooked on them. It would be good though if you called your doc and let them know what is going on. Good luck in school and hope it all works for you. TAKE CARE!!!!!!!!!

I got in touch with my pdoc this morning, and he told me to just quit taking the Lexapro until finals are over. which was fine, except that i was a complete mess from the drug and just not taking it didn't fix anything. He was then out of the office until monday, so I ended up going to urgent care (which i found terribly embaracing) to beg for some anxiety drug until i can see my doctor on monday. and HURRAY he gave me a drug called Ativan which i'd never heard of, but love already. 20 minutes after i took the itty-bitty pill i felt better than i have in months. so anyway, when i go back to the pdoc, i will insist that i have something like ativan to help me out when i resume trying antidepressants.

Hi Jana, under the circumstances you probably did the best thing for now. The ativan is like I described you getting. Please dont take anymore than you need. It is a quick fix to your problem. I am glad you found relief though. I also have had the gerd, I have nexium, protonix and prevacid. Cant say if the gerd med you were taking was the problem. Maybe try the lexapro with another gerd med and start at 5mg amd see what happens. If it does not work for you please try some other med, but give it a fair chance. Dont even think the ativan is your cure. It is just covering up the real problem!!!! TAKE CARE!!!!

Based on the complaints of lexapro making one tired, I would guess thats the problem. Try taking that one at a different late afternoon or early evening and see if that helps. You have to kind of play with the times and see what works. I have other thoughts but will keep them to myself since I am not a doctor. TAKE CARE!!!!!!!!

I agree with blkvettes about the ativan being a temporary medication. My sister is addicted to nerve pills. I did take xanax for a few months when I was first taking zoloft. The side effects of zoloft were bad for me and I could not sleep. I only took them when I needed them. I did like the way they made me feel, but I also knew they are very addictive.

This thread is a Godsend! I am new to Lexapro as are many of those who've posted here. I'm taking 20 mg. It seemed at first as if it was a waste of time and money but gradually I've felt better. I am so grateful for those who encouraged patience. Now I'm starting to get some benefit. I must admit that I've dodged all the side effects mentioned except the perspiration. My wife and I are most pleased that one of the side effects discussed never showed up at all. BTW, she is taking 10 mg. and reports no side effects except a slight increase in propensity to perspire.

Yes, lexapro kept me up the first month I was on it. It seemed like I couldnt sleep at night and then would sleep into the day. I started taking it in the evening around 5 or 6 pm and this helped. This side effect should go away, but you can talk to your doctor about it and get something for sleep for a while.

I too experienced a lot of perspiration, mostly at night, but like most of the SE's, this also went away. Occasionally I still get a little sweaty during the day, only when I start working on something, not as bad as it was and it doesn't last very long.

I am only too glad to help out, so many people on this board gave me encouragement when I was SURE Lex was not going to work for me.

To everyone out there, struggling and suffering, please be patient as some meds take longer to work than you hope or expect.

GOOD LUCK TO US ALL!

From monitoring this board and my own experience I would have to say YES.

I have been an insomniac most of my life ( back injury - car accident, plus STRESS!!! ). When I started Lex my insomnia got worse.

Have been on Lex almost 4 mos. and now I have to say that I have never slept so well!! I take it around 2-3PM, fall asleep around 11PM, and sleep soundly through the nite. Occasionally I am aware that I wake up in the early morning hours, but go right back to sleep.

For me the insomnia side effect went away after about 3 weeks, and now I have no problems in that area, in fact I have to say Lex has improved my "nite life"!

That is a very fair question and can be answered many ways. My case is a chemical imbalance, which I believe in. The benzo just gives temporary relief, where as my AD gives me 24 hour relief as it balances the chemicals in my brain. There are also all kinds of depression. Maybe a person that has been abused or lost a loved needs therapy and this will work for them. I guess in some cases of anxiety a benzo may be all a person needs. I had severe panic attacks and the benzo only gave me reief if I took a lot of it. It does help with my anxiety, but I would prefer not to take it. There is so much that researchers dont know about the brain itself. I guess everything comes down to the doctor and hoping he gives the right med or therapy for the right illness and the right dose for the meds themselves. I have had 4 pdocs in less than 6 months. If they cant answer simple questions about the meds that I know from the internet, I move on. But benzos can create new problems if abused. I like your thought on this subject and hope others jump in. I am a very curious person and read a lot on this illness and love to hear peoples thoughts on the subject. I hope you are well!!!! Things went pretty well to start off with but I'm now getting a continual upset stomach and loss of appetite. I take nexium for gerd so I stopped that . That didn'nt seem to help so I tried to back off ambien that didn't seem to help (or a least didn't completely fix it) so now I'm backing off the Lexapro at least for a while to see if I can get on top of this. Lexapro seems to be the source of the problem . I will post later to let others know the results.

Of course we want relief, so we do it, but do our $180/hr shrinks realize all this trial and error is costly to us patients???

I don't think any of the healthcare professionals give and the drug companies give two hoots about us and prescription cost! I have insurance and I think that $17 a month is alot of money. My Pdoc didn't even offer me a free sample.

I have taken zoloft in the past and now lexapro. The first month on both, my anxiety was worse. It was a side effect for me and did go away. On the zoloft I took xanax for a while as I was in such bad shape anyway by the time I went to the doc for meds. This time I just toughed it out. The side effect of increased anxiety wasnt as bad with the lex though.

Hey guys,

Just thought I would answer to this post with
what has happened to me.

If it wasen't for meds., I probably wouldn't
be here today. As in previous posts- I "fought"
the major depression and panic attacks for 7-8
years without meds. I went through "therapy"
(counseling), hospitalizations, shock treatments,
etc. If anyone could say anything- it would be
me! This has been for most of my adult life!
No, med is not a "cure all", but when your brain
is racked and racked, and you've been through
what I've been, you come to a "balanced" conclusion- it's not all pysch! I hate having to
depend on meds to live, but I'm at "peace" within
myself if the Lord uses them to help me to live!
Just like a diabetic, or cancer patient, etc...
I believe that something went astray somewhere
in my brain. Science hasen't even hardly "addressed" the brain yet! There is so
much "unknown" ground! However, if someone is
going through depression, anxiety, etc., and KNOWS
why- this may be a different story. I know of
people who use the meds only a short time, and
then get off of them- which is great!

As far as "addiction" goes- I think they can all
be addicting! Go off the meds, and there's
"withdrawel", stay on and they become a habit.

In a nutshell, there are all different kinds of
"labels" (diagnosis)- all different levels-
all different symptoms, etc. If one "theory"
was correct- why is there so much pain still?

I've been on both sides, seeking answers all the
time. I've got to live with me (my family too-
feel sorry for them! LOL!!!). Anyway, I don't
"wish" to go through another nervous breakdown,
nor to be "sick" and go through my life with the
past again! My water pot may be "cracked" alittle
but, I can still help the flowers around me to
grow!

Lex has "helped" me by keeping my levels in
check. I DO understand where you are coming from,
and I hope that I haven't offended anyone. This
is not my intention(s).

I'm new to all this and don't know that I understand everything said, but depression runs in my family and so I think that would be chemical. I just started lex 3 days ago, noticed a lot of yawning during the day, and now I'm up at 12am, alert with nausea. Was on Wellbutrin but had severe head aches. Has anyone come off of lex and not had to start something new? I expect this to be a "get me balanced again" thing and then let my body take over, but I'm hearing a lot of what sounds like long term meds talk. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Also, I'm newly hyper thyroid and wondering how this depression may be related. Any comments?

My husband's analysis is that the medications even me out enough to deal with everyday reality/stress.

In my case, I truly believe this is a chemical imbalance that is very much heriditary (possibly on both sides of the family) and has been exacerbated by early menopause.

A friend of mine tells me (quite often) that if I had gone through twelve years of therapy I wouldn't need medications, however, when she asked me (a few weeks ago) if I feel depressed the very minute I wake up, and I answered "yes," she reconsidered her suggestion, conceding that perhaps my depression is, in large part, the result of a chemical imbalance.

I have no doubt that a childhood spent with a mother who also suffers from severe depression, and perhaps even borderline personality disorder, had an impact on the way I react to stress and to certain social situations, but there's just too much of a difference on the medications to believe that they don't really work (in my instance - can't speak for anyone else).

I just spent the last hour laughing to the point of tears with my son and husband. One month ago that wouldn't have been possible. I attribute that to the medications.

Hi there, your stomach should settle down with time. I have read people who quit there meds in the first 3 years 2 out of 3 will become depressed again. Are you asking if your thyroid can cause depression. If so the answer would be yes. Talk to your doctor on this!!!!

Hi there Under the Weather,

I'm sorry to hear about the nausea you're experiencing. I wonder if those sea bands would help? A friend of mine used them during pregnancy and said they really cut down on the nauseousness.

Re: thyroid - I think depression can be related to thyroid disorders. I read a great book about this several years ago (but can't remember the title). If I think of it I'll post an Amazon link.

I'm on a combination of Adderall, Wellbutrin and 5 mg. of Lexapro. I take the Lexapro pretty late in the evening.

I was on 10 mg. (and went off) about six weeks ago. I found 10 mg. to be high of a dosage and simply couldn't take it in the morning without being zombie-like the rest of the day.

Many people here have done well with Lexapro, which has encouraged me to stay with it this time. Blkvettes, Okopolosi (sp?) and 'lil Jimi are three that come to mind immediately. Maybe you can do a search over the last few months and get a feel for the different side effects and how they have fared with this medication.

This Monday will be the third week mark for me, but considering the other medications I'm taking I might not be the best for comparison.

I hope you start feeling better soon. You'll get a lot of great words of wisdom from the long-term Lexapro (and non-Lexapro users as well) users here on this board.

Best wishes!

Lee
