Xanax causing depression???

Posted by ace on April 13, 2003, at 21:10:11

I'm noticing that when I take 1mg Xanax, in addition to it's great calming effects, I feel somewhat down, unmotivated. Has anyone experienced/heard of this phenomenon with Xanax.

Cheers!
Ace.

Ace- That also seemed to be my case too. I only take 0.25mg Xanex as needed. It does wonders for my anxiety but it always makes me feel down and kind of blah. I don't know what it is. I guess for the moment I would rather be down then feeling like my heart is going to jump out of my chest. Peace.

any type of anti anxiety med is a 'downer' so I would conclude in my most unprofessional knowledge. they would cause a depression, more so if you are wired for depression.
hows that sound??

No, you're not alone. Benzos have a negative effect on affect in some people. It's not common, especially for Xanax, which is known to be (on average) a mild antidepressants, but it does happen. What you describe is more often found with Klonopin. Klonopin seems to be marginally a mood depressant for me, whereas Xanax is definitely antidepressant.

You might ask your doctor if you could try another benzo, valium perhaps.

Cheers,

Britt
