Has anyone tried the other of the big "three" MAOI's - Marplan? I read some older posts but folks were mostly starting on it then. I'd love to hear from a Marplan user who has used Nardil or Parnate also. Which did you prefer, and what about the side effects?
I'm a two-decades long Nardil user who found it increasingly less effective over time and who for the past year has tried Parnate. It is definitely less energizing, but has had some mild-moderate benefit re social phobia and anxiety. The big drawback is that it makes me pretty fatigued and sleepy at 40 mg or up (which I'm now trying - up until now it has been 20-30 mg.

>Marplan was the first MAOI I was prescribed, and I always thought it was the best of the group. I had to switch to Nardil in the early 1990s after taking Marplan for 2-3 years, and I had a lot of weight gain problems that I didn't have with Marplan.
Also, I never got sleepy with Marplan, but haven't had this problem with Nardil either.
Now that Marplan is available again, I'm thinking of switching back, but my doctor recommends I stop Nardil entirely and go drug-free for a couple of weeks before beginning the Marplan. I haven't yet been able to do this because my mood crashes so badly during the washout period.

In the better late than never category....<g>
I take Marplan and love it. I have taken both Nardil and Parnate in the past (on and off for 15 years) I find the Marplan the best for depression. I have some carb cravings, and possible sleep problems, but no big deal especially considering how well the Marplan works. And I need very little of it...worked up to 30 mg a day, but am going down to 10 mg one day and 20 the next because I just don't need that much to keep depression under control. Also have more energy and better ability to concentrate.

I have taken Nardil for 12 years and Pfizer bought out Park Davis the origional maker. It suddenly stopped working in August of 03 after the FDA made all companies take out Gluten because some people have allergies to it. I have found out Pfizer changed the formula with FDA approval of course, who's side are they on? Not ours that is for sure. So I'm looking for something to take the place of it. Tried Tricyclics and SSRI's and some of the odd ball stuff. Only Nardil was effective for my SSAD, Atypical Depression and GAD along with Valium. Has anyone had luck with Marplan for the conditions I have listed above? Tried Parnate and found it far to stimulating, most likely due to my GAD. Thank's for any help I can get!
Sincerely,
Luther

Boy, Im glad you said that, I just switched back to Nardil and finding it not working as well as it used to. In fact just went up to 60mg where I used to only have to take 45. And that SMELL.... Will try increasing dose, and if that doesnt work will go back to Marplan.
Dont know what GAD is, so dont know if it will affect it. I did find Klonopin more than anything else seemed to help the stimulating effect of the parnate or Marplan when it got too much.
Yup, Ive taken all three. All worked, but I also found Parnate too stimulating. Marplan is kinda in the middle...more than Nardil and less than Parnate, so its definitly worth a try for you.
Good luck and let us know how you do.
