JUST STARTED RISPERDAL - Help!

Posted by mmcasey on April 11, 2003, at 8:22:22

I saw a new psychiatrist yesterday and he prescribed Risperdal
to add to the Paxil that I am already on. I felt pretty hesitant
about being on an antipsychotic, but I am desperate for SOMETHING
to work. Have people had luck with this? Also, what side effects
has anyone had? I'm worried about gaining weight, and also,
I only took 1/2 mg last night, but today I already feel very drowsy and
groggy.

It is always a scary thing when we start a new med however give the Risperdal a chance to work. I do know my daughter was on it for 7 years and later was put on Abilify.

Know that if the Risperdal is not working for you or you do get really bothersome side effects from it there are always other ones to try. Most of your newer anti-psychotic meds do not give one the many side effects that the older ones did. So you should be ok with Risperdal it is one of the newer classes of anti-psychotics. However there are even newer ones than Risperdal. So keeping this in mind give the Risperdal a try and like I said if it does not work for you there are even newer ones you may try. Good luck.

Risperdal works great for me. I take 1/2 mg. two times a day. I use it as a mood stabilizer, but mostly to help with my self injury problem and have found it very effective. I am VERY paranoid about gaining weight so sometimes I'm bad about taking it, but I've found at this low does it doesn't seem to be a problem. Constipation is one side effect though. The drowsiness should go away once you've been on it for a few days. Good luck!

I will be doing the same soon - zyprexa or risperidal. I'm augmenting it for OCD and residual anxiety. How about you?
Please let me know how you go.

Sorry I couldn't help more,
Ace.

7 years? Did she suffer any long-term s/effects and how was her withdrawal. I would really love to know as I'm contemplating this med. Thanks so much,

Risperdal was a wonder drug for me. It made me feel okay for the first time in 20 years!!! Downside was that I had to also take bromocryptine to counteract lactation (I'm female). Switched to Seroquel since then. No problems. Zyprexa is similar but causes weight gain in many people. Yes, Risperdal worked as an AD for me. Good luck. MIMI
