Anyone try L-theanine for anxiety?

It sounds quite interesting, and I'm considering buying some. Anyone have any experiences?

Yes, I have tried it and it made me a little irritable and that is about it. A friend of mine with no affective disorder tried it with no effect. Some here have had positive experiences so it just goes to show you that for some it may work and others it may not. Magnesium has been great for my anxiety/sleep. take care and good luck

I find that L-theanine (unlike most other supplements I've tried) actually has a noticeable effect. It's sort of energizing/focusing/calming at the same time. It's not as dramatic as prescription meds, but I'm convinced that the effect is real, and can be mildly useful. It's definitely worth a try. The Japanese use it extensively -- they add it to gum, soft drinks, etc.

BTW, you could get the same effect by drinking lots of green tea -- this amino acid is abundant in tea, especially the less-fermented kinds (= green).

I find it mildly calming, which is pleasant. As far as I know, it's unique in that it stimulates dopamine and gaba at the same time, which both makes you more alert and more relaxed. Usually drugs increase dopamine and glutamate - to stimulate - or gaba and seratonin - to sedate. Theanine gives you the best of both, but the effect is mild.
