I read up on Xyrem, which is GHB that is approved for narcolepsy. It sounds like it has a special control system on it that requires physicians to only prescribe it to narcoleptics, since the place the physician must call in the prescription to tells the doctor to do tests first for narcolepsy. I'm wondering if a doctor can simply side-step this and prescribe it off-label for something like anxiety? Anyone?

Not all states and not all insurance plans to cover it, so check these things over first.
Your doctor may prescribe this, which is a schedule III, for any purpose. I have social anxiety, but my doctor probabably won't prescribe it since he won't prescribe Klonopin.
