ECT: unilateral vs. bilateral side effects

Posted by Dave1 on March 18, 2003, at 9:11:46

Hi,

I probably already asked this, but for those people who have had both unilateral and bilateral ECT, did you notice a difference in the amount of confusion and disorientation when waking up from a treatment. I had some bilaterals and the waking up was really bothersome. I thought maybe unilateral would be easier.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi, I had unilateral ECT 9 times. I haven't had bilateral and will never do ECT again anyway! Oh yeah, with unilateral-I woke up and didn't know where I was, didn't recognize a friend and actually said-"do I know you?" But quickly I remembered.
Hope this helped?

Thanks,

Hi Dave, ECT did help me. My depression isn't as bad as it used to be. I get more of situational stress-like symptoms now instead of such horrible depression, but the meds help too.
There is one important thing though, that ECT helped me with the most concerning the way I feel. are you interested? I'd be happy to share.

Sure I'm interested. Also, why did you say you wouldn't do it again

Hi, ok, the biggest thing that was positive, was that after the ECT-I could see things more clearly, therapy worked for me better, and I could actually work on my issues that were making me depressed-it was weird, great, but weird. I wouldn't do it again because I lost the 2 years of my life before I did it:-( It's hard for my family and friends because they talk about something and I totally blank out-because ECT does affect one's short-term memory-it did mine anyway. Other than that it was ok-I'm a tough gal, but it is an extreme procedure, but not too bad if you can handle going under and getting poked, and doing it every other day.
Hope this helped? Hope to hear back from ya!
