Focalin less agitating than methylphenidate?

Posted by Ame Sans Vie on February 26, 2003, at 10:35:57

Just looking for any thoughts on this from people who have tried both. I found Ritalin much too anxiety-provoking in the past, but at the same time decidedly more therapeutic than Adderall or methamphetamine. How does dexmethylphenidate measure up? Thanks.

I used to take regular Ritalin and now cannot tolerate it due to edginess and skin rashes. Focalin is tolerable and accepatable to, and so I sometimes take it for short periods. I prefer it to Ritalin.

The only thing that bothers me about Focalin, however, is that when it wears off, I feel sort of wasted and depressed. This never happened to me on Ritalin; in constrast, I'd feel great after the Ritalin-rebound passedm with a fresh brain and nice energy. Focalin leaves me feeling used up, almost like an ampetapmine, sometimes worse. This is one reason I don't take it very often.

Anyone else notice this about Focalin?

Hm... I definitely don't need that. I never cross anything entirely off the list of things to try, but sounds like I probably won't bother with Focalin until after I give both Dexedrine and Desoxyn a try with the clonazepam/buspirone.

I would NOT take my experience as universal! :) I am highly sensitive to meds, and can only take low does of stims, and only SOME stims, at that!

I have tried almost all the stims, and I considered Focalin at the dose I was on (5mg) to be like a strong cup of coffee. Like another poster here, I felt left down, worn out and tired after it wore off.

My preference is Concerta, which is methylphenidate in a specially designed capsule so that it releases some of the medication immediately, then dispenses the rest over an 8-12 hour period. I find that, taken early enough in the day, it does not interefere with my sleep. It only gives me enough of a stimulation to help with the fatigue, but doesn't do much for my mood.

I just started Strattera yesterday, so I am hopeful that it will increase my mood so that I can get some relief from the day-to-day depression.

Take good care,

Antonio
