Fish Oil brands

Posted by michael on February 20, 2003, at 20:05:53

I know that this may be cheating a little... but I was wondering if anyone has read what ConsumerLabs had to say about the various brands of fish oil that they tested...? (20 of them, I believe: http://www.consumerlab.com/results/omega3.asp)

They indicated that some of them didn't live up to what is printed on the labels, but to get all of the details, you need to be a subscriber - which I am not. So, just wondering if anyone might have access to that info, and be willing to share some more of the details with the rest of us?

Thanks for any help.

Michael

Three brands that I've been able to find locally are:

Sundown (360 mg EPA/240 mg DHA)
Nature Made (432 mg EPA/288 mg DHA)
Daily Source (360 mg EPA/240 mg DHA)

Just wondering if anyone has any personal experience with any of these? (good or bad)

... or if anyone knows if any of them are among those that failed the tests at Consumer Labs?

(sorry if I missed previous discussions that covered any of this stuff-haven't come across it yet in my searches)

Thanks for any feedback.

Hi. Wonder if I can piggyback my question onto this discussion?

What's the recommended dosage for fish oil?

I've been told my my doctor to take it to lower my triglyceride levels, and hope it'll be a mood booster too.

Thanks!

Hi Mopey,

Not much discussion going on, as of yet, in this thread... but you're welcome to join what there is...

I just started looking into this recently, & from what I understand, the goal is to get 1,000 mg of EPA per day. The box/bottle should indicate how much each capsule (or teaspoon? for actual oils) provides.

I'm sure that that is oversimplified, but if you search this site, there's more info in other threads - I just don't remember the details just now.

Hope that wasn't entirely useless (or misinformed)... Hopefully someone w/a better understanding of fish oils & omega 3, etc. will chime in.

michael

[btw - the target level that I mentioned is (I think?) related to use in depression. it may be different if the goal is to lower triglyceride levels... sorry, guess I'm not much help to you on this one.]

Mopey -

You can take a look at this post/thread for starters:

"http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20021230/msgs/134185.html";

There's lots of info here at PB, but sometimes it takes a while to find it & sift through it... Hope that's at least a little more helpful.

Here's a fairly informative link on the topic, although it doesn't get in to EPA/DHA stuff.

I hope someone else posts some good answers for you!

Thanks, Michael and Stellaz, for your input and those links. Both were interesting and I'm now armed with info for my fish oil shopping expedition!

Thanks again...
