Help!
I just cut back from 300 to 250 imipramine and I've had a bad headache for a week. My doc thinks it's a withdrawl effect. I'm not sure. I'm also new to lexapro (2 weeks at 10 mg) and neurontin (3 weeks at 300) My doc thinks lexapro and neurontin are unlikely to be the culprit. Any advice? Theories?

I could be wrong, but I doubt you would have such headaches from reducing dosage from 300 to 250. I'm a strong advocate of medication combos. But one problem with medication combos is that when you do get some kind of adverse event, it is hard to pinpoint the culprit. Especially when two new drugs have recently been added. I just don't think going from 300 to 250 is going to cause that much trouble.
I would guess the headaches are actually a combination of everything. Your body is adjusting to new drug molecules and at the same time adjusting to a reduction of another.
Advil is safe and helpful for medication induced headaches. But if bad headaches continue for more than another week, I would then be more concerned.

Lia- I did have withdrawal from imipramine. I had headaches and nausea, but not until I went from 250 to a much lower dose. It turned out I just needed to cut down more slowly. Having been through a medication change recently, I can attest to the fact that your body is going through a lot now and it may take awhile to adjust.

Yes, you can certianly have withdrawl from any dosage reduction of any medication, including imipramine.
Imipramine suppresses cholenergic function, (and many other things too) and you can experience cholenergic rebound from a dose reduction.

It seems unlikely that such a small change in dose could produce headaches. However, headache is a possible withdrawal symptom since imipramine tends to lower blood pressure. You could be having rebound headaches as your body readjusts your blood pressure. Have you been experiencing atypically vivid dreams? That's one effect of imipramine withdrawal that I know first hand.
Feel Better,
Britt
