My son,19 1/2 years old unfortunately had a few eppisodes of nervouse breake down, and has tried to make a comeback, but realizing now, unfortunately instead of relaxing and having a happy time, and getting the right treatment, started taking classes at the college, but now he is realy deveastated, one Dr. prescribed Zyprexa, and on the second opinion the other Dr. prescribed Respirdal. 1st delimma is that he refuses to take anything, 2nd I'm really scared of these drugs considering all the side effects especially I have read that Respirdal causes mania, Zyprexa has the weight gaine and diabetics and lots more. What should I do? desperate mother.

Are there any non med alternatives? he seems to have been crushed, whether geneticly he had something or not, but I'm sure the conditions didn't help either. Help!

A nervous breakdown is a big deal. What would you do if he had a major medical problem ?

what do mean? a major medical problem? how much more major it can be? he is gone coocoo, bizzark, crazy. I called it a nrvous break down whatever it means, because I didnot want to call him schizophrenia, but still he is responding and has a sence of reality.

>I think what stjames is saying is that people know
how to respond to a physical medical problem but
when it comes to mental and emotional issues which
can be just as devasting they are in the dark.
I think if he wont take meds then at least therapy
and maybe with someone who is not a psychiatrist
would help. pdocs mostly tend to focus a lot on
drug therapy unless they have other training as well.J
