lexapro and water/weight

Posted by kemp on January 19, 2003, at 13:27:44

Hello, I'm new. Just started lexapro 5 mg. Feel bloated. Don't know if there's a connection or not. Any thoughts?

Hi! I've been on lexapro 10 mg for a couple of months. I haven't noticed any unusual water retention since I've started. Of course I'm not really the best person to reply because I have water weight probs all the time, b4 I ever started lexapro. I take Triamterene (I think thats spelled right) as needed for water retention. I would ask your doctor. Have you looked to see if water retention, edema, is a side effect? I always get bloated and start retaining water right b4 my menstrual cycle.

I'm fairly new myself, been posting here for a little over a week. Keep us updated!!!

Jodie

That's interesting because I think I have the same problem. My rings feel tighter. I also take clonazepam, so I don't know which it is. I read another post that several people have actually lost weight with clonazepam, if only I could have that side effect.....

Hellol!!

I also take clonazepam (Klonopin) I have off and on for quite a while. I know I haven't lost weight with it!!! I am supposed to take 1 mg in the am and 1 mg in the pm. I took that dose everyday for almost a year. Like I said though, I have always had probs with water retention. I take a pill, triamterene for it (as needed) so it's hard for me to tell if lexapro or klonopin has contributed to it any. I have the same probs with my rings, especially b4 I start my period. Sometimes I can't get them off. Or I will stop wearing them for a couple of days. Have you though about asking your doctor about the water retention, and see if you can get something to take for it?

I am new to Lexapro also. I feel the weight gain could be constipation (I had that with Effexor). Although, my breasts feel tender too and it isn't close enough to my period.Anyone else feeling that?

Sometimes my breasts feel tender also. I haven't thought about asking the Dr about taking anything for water retention, but wouldn't it be okay to take some kind of over the counter diuretic?

I wanted to add that I did a two week trial of Lexapro and I hate breast tenderness the whole time. As soon as I stopped it, the symptom went away. I had the same problem with Celexa (sister med of Lexapro). I also had menstrual problems with Celexa. Maybe they affect your hormones?

Hmmm, very interesting about the breast tenderness and menstrual problems. I read somewhere that Effexor could lead to heavier bleeding during periods. I wasn't on it long enough to tell. Maybe these new meds are similar? I wonder if men feel sensitivity too? I don't know if it would be safe to mix over-the-counter meds for water weight-I would ask your doctor. I am taking Extra B complex vitamins, as I normally would for PMS and it has not helped with breast tenderness.
