Nardil and REM sleep

Posted by ace on January 5, 2003, at 5:59:30

After being on Nardil for around 3 and 3 quater weeks I experienced a complete supression of REM sleep (as manifested by experiencing no dreams, and waking up suddenly in middle night and early morning) Now, just short of 5 wweks on this wonderful medicine I experienced a dream last night. Preety sure it was not in any Stage of slee. Dr. Bob and others have stated that with a complete lack of dreams (the full supression of REM sleep) this indicates one is on the right dose. I'm already experiencing thereaputic benifits, but I want to up the dose to 90mg. The fact that I had a dream, this would make it even more plausible? With a higher dose there is more suppression of REM sleep?
Thanks.

Yes, suppression of REM sleep has been correlated to mood improvement. For nardil in particular, I have read case reports in the literature where patients had relief from their depression a couple of days after complete REM suppression. But I would not use this as your guide to finding the optimal dose of nardil. To find the most effective dose for you, you must slowly taper the medication up and track your moods closely. This is truly only way to find the best dose, by carefully tracking your moods. I found that at 45mg I was depressed, 52.5mg depressed, 60mg felt good, 75mg felt depressed again.

Jumpy,
You mean to say you felt WORSE on a higher dose? I wouldn't expect that. So 60mg is your optimum?

I being treated for phobic anxiety, depersonalization syndrome and ocd -- not really depression.
It's been exactly 5 weeks -- but only 3 weeks at 60mg. I have noticed in the past few days sporadic happiness attacks, all-rounded general happiness, OCD hurting less and less (something I could have never imagined happening!) but the phobic anxiety might take some time. I've read these effects are usually last. Overall its been great so far, and I'm sure the phobic anxiety will be healed soon. But I feel at 90mg the anti-phobic properties are best.

Tell me what you think!

Yes, I tend to feel worse if I increase the dose above my optimal level. I think this is rare phenomenon. I would taper up your nardil dose slowly with the guidance of your pdoc to find the best dose for you. The only exception to this is if you have a history of bipolar disorder or you feel like you are getting manic on the nardil.
