ELAVIL FOR INSOMNIA?

Posted by Phyl on December 26, 2002, at 10:30:42

About 20 years ago, I went to a sleep lab and the doctor prescribed Elavil for me to help me sleep. Does this seem unusual to any of you? I was not diagnosed with depression at the time. (When I filled the prescription, I was given Mellaril in error. Because of the very bad reaction I had to Mellaril, I called the sleep psyciatrist who was alarmed and said "No, it is Elavil, not Mellaril. (Pharmacy error.)

I took the Elavil was able to refill the prescription for nearly five years. At about this time, I placed a call to the Sleep lab and the sleep psychiatrist was angry (at me!) that I had been taking Elavil for that length of time. I knew very little about meds at the time. He told me I should have been on it for just a month (but he never communicated this to me, and I had no problem at all getting refills).
After reading some of your posts, I think I was probably lucky that I used the Elavil only when I felt it was very necessary and not continuously.
From your posts, I realize now that I need to know exactly why I am given a certain prescription and I need to ask questions about it.
Still learning......

Low dose tryciclics are very common for persisting sleep disorders. They can be
sedating, and the serotonin boost, will
also enhance melatonin prodcution, thus
enhancing sleep

There is no problem with using a low dose
indefinately, infact many people I know,
have been for many years.
