I told my Pdoc that I was having trouble sleeping. I asked him if there was any non-benzo compound that would help me sleep. He gave me Trileptal. Does anyone know if this stuff can reduce social anxiety, since a lot of the other anticonvulsants do. I asked my Pdoc this and he said he did'nt know because he had never seen any studies on anxiety with this drug.
Any experiences or info are greatly appreciated.

Hi Lawrence,
All anti-convulstants I have been on have completely taken away my anxiety (currently on Trileptal). I used to have anxiety attacks daily before then (which lasted for six years). My advice is - try it, it'll be worth it if it works for you. Oh, it also helps me sleep at night.
Good luck to you : ) Let us know how you do...

What a scarey sounding name, trileptal!! Does anyone know trileptal's method of action. I can't seem to get any good reference material on it. It does'nt seem to fall into the same category as neurontin, lamictal and gabitril as having gabba inhibition action. Or am I incorrect?

Nope, that's what I got with the other mood stabilizers I've tried (Depakote and Gabitril). Since I've been on the Trileptal, I have noticed my personality is much more cheerier like it used to be and others have noticed it too. I've only been on it for a little over a month so I'm still in the "testing" phase, but it has been worth the trial so far even if it doesn't last. If by itself, it doesn't continue to work as well as time goes on, I will try playing around with the dosage and possibly add another med on (with my pdoc's advice of course). It's been the best mood stabilizer for me so far though.

Lawrence, it is a sodium ion channel antagonist, with some calcium-channel ion antagonism too. It is most closely related to Tegretol's mechanism. I haven't found it to be very anxiolytic. In fact, it makes me a bit "wired". But, that is helping me stay awake in the daytime and it seems to have an antidepessant effect, and seems to "clear my head" to some degree. I only take 150mg a day (75mg/bid). Any more and I find it too nauseating and activating.
