Fish Oil

Posted by krista on November 22, 2002, at 20:10:18

I am thinking of starting to take fish oil along with my meds. My question is, can fish oil cause you to gain weight? I also have an eating disorder and am worried about such. What are the calories and fat in each capsule?

Hi Krista. Especially if you have any kind of eating disorder, fish oil will be good for your health in general, and hopefully, will help your mood and anxiety as well.

Fats can generally be approximated as 1 gram = 9 calories. But fish oil is a polyunsaturated fat, and doesn't go towards energy production (I'm making a broad generalization), so it really doesn't matter much about the calories. Each capsule is pure fat, but no more than 9 calories.

What might be a problem for you (there are many eating disorders) is that you may not digest or absorb fat well. Don't take a lot of it to begin with. Take it with your largest food intake of the day, and just be patient. Don't increase by more than one capsule a day, each week.

Thanks so much for asking that question!! I also have an ED, and was curious about the same...

Previous posts have mentioned disruption of sleep, how so? Also, what other side effects? So far, I've gathered the following: sleep disruption, "fishy burps", diarrhea...anything else?

Thanks Larry.
I have now purchased the fish oil and will start tomorow. For those reading this post who also suffer from an Eating Disorder as well as depression, I have also heard of something else that may be helpful. A friend of mine is taking "no flush" Niacin for her bulimia. There have been studies that claim Niacin may decrease the impulse to binge eat. My friend has found it to help her significantly. It seems that quite often people with depression may also suffer from an ED. This may be helpful for bulimia as well as binge eating disorder. I am going to start taking the Niacin as well as the fish oil. For anyone interested, I will keep you posted to it's effect.

I'm glad you're going ahead with the fish oil, and the niacin. One caution, though. You shouldn't supplement with one B-vitamin in isolation; increasing the supply of one B-vitamin increases the demand on the body for others. Put that together with an eating disorder, and you can hurt yourself. Take a B-complex tablet (they're cheap) every time you take the niacin.
