Need meds fast -- AUGH!

Posted by bookgurl99 on November 17, 2002, at 22:34:20

What should I do? I only have 2 days worth of Zoloft left. I lost my prescription(the paper form) for Zoloft, which a psych wrote way back in May and didn't need because I've somehow managed to have free samples this whole time. Luckily, I go to a 'get-acquainted' visit with a new dr. later this week. Do I just live with not having Zoloft for a couple of days, and get a script from the new doc? Would she be likely to accept my saying 'i'm prescribed this much per day, blah blah blah,' and give it to me, or need to confirm with the original doc?

Also, when I tried calling the original guy -- who works at one of those hospitals where they have layers of nurses to 'protect' the dr --- and tried to ask for a prescription for it, saying I only had a couple days of pills, they were like "you could just transfer the prescription to a pharmacy in your area." Yeah, but the prescription had never been filled _anywhere_. Sometimes I feel like they're just out to provide as little service as possible.

Pharmacokinetics:
Following multiple oral once-daily doses of 200 mg, the mean peak plasma concentration (C(max)) of sertraline is 0.19 mcg/mL occurring between 6 to 8 hours post-dose. The area under the plasma concentration time is 2.8 mg hr/L. For desmethylsertraline, C(max) is 0.14 mcg/mL, the half-life 65 hours and the area under the curve 2.3 mg hr/L. Following single or multiple oral once-daily doses of 50 to 400 mg/day the average terminal elimination half-life is approximately 26 hours. Linear dose proportionality has been demonstrated over the clinical dose range of 50 to 200 mg/day.

I think you can miss a day and not have any problems. I would ask your new doc for a few days
to cover you till your visit.

I don't think you will like how you feel if you go for a few days without Zoloft (discontinuation syndrome). Have your pharmacist call the physician who wrote the Rx that you never had filled. Tell the pharmacist you are out and need
a refill. By doing this, the physician or his nurse will authorize the refill. No problem that I can see. As far as your new doctor is concerned, remember you are taking Zoloft, not narcotics. You tell the new doc what you are taking and that is that. He or she will write your new script. The important point here is how did you let yourself get so low on your meds? Careful, discontinuation syndrome sucks big time.
Be well, Anne:)
