I would like to ask Dr. Gershon if in his
experience he and his colleagues have seen
any specific bipolar physical symptoms that
are more serious than the psychological ones. For example, if a BP person is left unmedicated,
have any doctors witnessed such things as
seizures, or thyroid fluctuations or (as Kraeplin
writes) salt crystals on the skin... anything
like that.It really does seem to be some sort of metabolic
disorder, and if that's true, maybe some physical
symptoms really nail the diagnosis.Thank you for your time (not sure if you are
still here answering).Squiggles

No, I'm not familiar with specific physical symptoms resulting from Bipolar disorder. But it can work the other way around -- disorders of the thyroid, for example, can lead to Bipolar disorder, and episodes of mania and depression may be provoked by hypoglycemia in patients treated with insulin for diabetes mellitus.

Thanks Dr. Gershon,
Maybe we can look forward to the genome
project for evidence of specific affective
disorders-- what a frustrating thing it is,
and where there is no blood test, anything
goes;Squiggles

I found a neat article on the subject;
needless to say, we are dealing with a
philsophical as well as scientific problem
in psychiatry.http://www.mcmanweb.com/article-71.htm

I recently suffered from a severe mixed episode that seemed to be triggered by a nasty bout of gastro.....I've always had problems with reactive hypoglycemia and a few days of not eating through me over hte edge. Has anyone else had problems with reactive hypoglycemia and gastroenteritis triggering episodes??? I've read a little about the connection between glucose metabolism, adrenal responses and mood disorders, but this info is scattered. Like Gershon saying that too much insulin can trigger mania and depression. Does anyone know of some reviews or articles on this sort of thing?
Cheers,
AmyCheers,
Amy
