I know all the Lexapro questions are getting tiresome....
BUT...I just started taking Lexapro about 5 or 6 days ago...
I'm taking 5 mg's. I'm hoping that's going to be enough, but
I'm skeptical...I just still don't understand...If 20 mg's was the
standard dose of celexa...and 10 mg's of Lexapro is equivalent to 40 mg's
of celexa....why is that the standard dose of Lexapro? Why isn't the standard
dose of Lexapro 5 mg's? I just want to be sure I'm getting a therapeutic dose.
I'm taking 5mg's because I want to get less side effects...hopefully less sexual
side effects.

I don't think it's necessarily correct to say that 20mg is the standard dose of Celexa. The Celexa prescribing info, available at Celexa.com, says that Celexa "should be administered at an initial dose of 20 mg once daily, generally with an increase to dose of 40 mg/day." Pharmrep, who works for the manufacturer, said in a post that notwithstanding the prescribing info, most family doctors prescribe 20 mg and most psychiatrists prescribe the higher dose.
Lexapro prescribing info, available at Lexapro.com, says "The recommended dose of Lexapro is 10 mg once daily. A fixed dose trial of Lexapro demonstrated the effectiveness of both 10 mg and 20 mg of Lexapro, but failed to demonstrate a greater benefit of 20 mg over 10 mg." Therefore, the manufacturer recommends 10 mg, not 5 mg. Everything about Lexapro, I'm sure you know, is controversial, at least on this board.
Were you taking Celexa before? If so, how much?
Myself, I wonder if one could scale back to 5mg as a maintenance dose after experiencing the benefits of a therapeutic dose for a few months.

I found 20 mg's of Celexa to be just fine....but
10 mg's of celexa was not enough....so if 5 mg's of
lexapro is REALLY equivalent to 20 mg's of celexa...it should
do me, but I wonder if it really is the equivalent of 20 mg's of
celexa...I guess the only true trial is to wait and see how it
goes...there's never any guessing on these things...only true
experience is what it boils down to...

Just wanted to say that I am paying attention to your experiences. I am so grateful to have the benefits of ADs but the sexual side effects are a bummer.
This is the end of the thread.
