NEED ADVICE ON GLUTAMIC ACID!!!

Posted by freedom2001 on October 7, 2002, at 3:36:54

I had OCD and now started to take a mineral supplement including calcium, magnesium, potassium, boron, vitamin D etc.

But it includes glutamic acid, which from my discovery, is an excitory neurotransmitter.

I read someone that a boy with mild tics and OCD, AHDH had his amino levels examined and have high levels of glutamic acids. His father wants to counteract his son's glumatic acids with GABA/taurine etc, an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

But I also read that glutamic acid can be transformed into GABA.

So as an OCD patient, should I take glutamic acid (100mg) or seriously avoid it??????

Please advice!!!

Thanks!

This is just one experience, but it made my depression and anxiety MUCH worse. L-taurine seemed to be smooth and fairly harmless, with some mild relaxent qualities. I have read some pretty nasty thing about using glutamic acid, and I believe it is a nt that is released in massive quantities in the brain during a stroke. Whether it is just an effect, or cause of, I don't know. Otherwise, I'd steer clear of it.

Best,
Jay

It is best to avoid it. I heard that in almost all the serious degenerative neurological diseases, high levels of glutamic acid are found in the brain.

Hi.. I think glutamate should be avoided. It is a transmitter which primes receptors throughout the brain to react to various excitatory neurotransmitters. It does tend to result in more GABA transmission, but the glutamate-GABA increase may result in worse OCD symptoms.

Lithium and Lamotrigine both act to normalize glutamate levels in bipolar disorder. Because glutamate levels are low in unipolar disorder, there's a lot of research interest in drugs which raise it to normal- Prozac is actually one that does!

The research on OCD seems to be less advanced than for mood disorders, but I was really surprised to discover that it is suspected of being, at least partly, an autoimmune disorder (Johns Hopkins). Have you come across that idea?

What about Xanax and those benzos? I'm taking Xanax to augment my Prozac. I thought Xanax is supposed to improve on the GABA stuff? I've been researching on GABA but it gets more confusing the more I read. Some say Gabapentin is good as an augmentation while 1 study does not proof it.

Yes, if you are talking about strep throat infection.

Pls share with me on any valuable extra info on treating OCD.

Thanks.
