How do you know when to go to the hospital?

Posted by sienna on September 27, 2002, at 18:03:28

Hi,

Im wondering how do people know when to go to the hospital? Like if you feel really out of control and it feels really scary and dangerous, how do you know when you should go. Im not sure if this is the right board for this question, but Ive been trying to figure this out, and im not sure.

thanks

Sienna,
Don't let worrying about what board to post to keep you from posting at all. Especially when your question is as important as that one. The worst that can happen is that Bob will "redirect" your post - moving it to a better board or another poster will suggest that you will get more answers somewhere else.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question. I've never made that decision. I think if you are seriously wondering if it's time to go that it may be. Many posters here have made that decision and I'm sure you will get some better answers soon.

Sienna,
If you want to see whether your post has appeared you will need to refresh your screen. Your post will then show on the list of posts. To answer a post and have your answer appear indented under that post go to the bottom of the post itself and select "post a new follow up".

I know you already have found the other boards - it all works the same way there.

Please forgive me if you know this already. And if you have questions that aren't covered ask them anywhere.

Jane

Thanks Jane,

I feel better right now then I have lately. So that is good. I don't think I need to go right now, but i think I DID need to go a few weeks ago, and was a complete wreck. So Im trying to find out how bad is bad enough, because it is very confusing. I still feel really volatile, but luckily I go to school, and can't really miss class so that is incentive to make myself hold it together. Sometimes its really hard though.
Thanks for writing me.

Sienna

But I feel better than I did before, I just dont know how bad is bad enough. I think I should have gone last time. I still dont feel right. Im afraid it's going to get that bad again. I'm unable to work and Im afraid of what will happen when my disability runs out. Its expensive to live here in California. Just thinking about this stuff really makes me panicky. Im not suicidal, right now, but I still am having some thoughts that way. I was goign to buy a gun, but i couldnt find my ID, then now I found it and stared at it in disbelief because I knew that meant it was that easy.

Really scary. Sorry to be so depressing, it's just hard right now and my mood is different every day.

Have you talked with anyone about your feelings? Perhaps there's a counselor at your school with whom you could discuss your thoughts.

I have felt the way you were feeling--it's very painful. For me, talking with my therapist made the deepest darkness fade away somewhat--I'm glad I decided to go--it really worked for me.

Feel better soon!

If you are really unhappy, can't organize your thoughts except thinking about suicide, etc., are panicky and fearful, you need a safe place.

One thing's for sure, don't sit home in a panic trying to tough it out. When you are hurting and think you may be a danger to yourself, then go.

Life is more important than money. When you feel better, then you can tackle the money issue but save yourself first.

I think when you reach that point of either total numbness to anything or you think about a gun again, then go.

In Austin, there's one hospital that is better staffed if you're having mental health issues.
Ask your doctor or someone which hospital near you is best for mental health issues. You'll be a step ahead if you have to go.

Your experience can be valuable here so keep posting. You're helping others too. Believe me, you can and will get better, but if you need a helping hand to get there, that's what hospitals are for.

Just woke up, hope this makes sense, sienna.

Phil

Thanks everyone

I think i needed to go a month ago, but am feeling better now. But im gunshy, like i feel like Im not really out of the woods yet. Its a weird feeling. I hope i dont get that bad again, but now i have a better idea of when i should go. Thats one of the things that was scary before is I didnt know how bad would it have to get.
