Posted by lilsis on September 25, 2002, at 19:33:02

okay guys i am new at this and i never knew i was depressed until i was told i was. and now i started taking these pills and realized how very depressed i am. i just started taking them monday and it is now wenesday and i am completly fucked up. like these pills make me so high x doesn`t even compair no does cokaine. when does this high feeling go away. also i get the shakes really bad and feel incredibly cracked out. it feels like the morning after a drug binge. and the shakes are horrible and i am afraid to be around people now. i also can`t stop smiling around people i don`t like. i feel like i am naked in a room with 100000000 people and embarrassed so that is why i cant stop smiling. i get dreams of the next day but they are just dreams and it confuses the hell outa me. and the energy rushes make my heart feel like it is going to explode. and when i work out after 30 seconds of cardio i almost passout and can`t feel my body. please help explain

please help me find out what i should be on. i have bad temper tantrums out of nowhere and they can`t be controlled. when i try to control them i get sick to my stomach. i get horrible panic attacks when i think of anything really. like i will notcie my breathing and start hyperventilating or if i don`t under stand i get bad anxiety attacks. and i can not pay attention for the life of me and am hype as hell anyway and the fact that my mind keeps roaming makes me have more anxiety attacks. so what do you all suggest

What dose did you start at? Do you take any other medications? I just started on effexor (37.5 mgs) eight days ago, and haven't had any of those symptoms??? I don't have enough experience yet, as this is the first AD i've ever taken, but i would suggest you call your doctor.

I have been on the effexor for just over two weeks now, prior to that I was on paxil. The first week of effexor was terrible!!. The spaced out feeling, the irritability, the paranoid dreams (I actually had to sleep with the lights on one night) the highs and lows, ect.. However by the end of the first week it subsided and now I am on 75mg and feel great.

Their are many meds. out there and not all of them will be right for you, if you are uncomfortable with this med. speak to your Dr. as they should and can prescribe something else for you.

Good luck.

I was on effexor for six weeks, starting at 37.5 mg, and with every dosage increase, I also experienced that "spaced out" , dizzy feeling. Could no longer tolerate it and am now weaning off. The withdrawal is awful...I am down to 37.5 mg but am experiencing severe nausea, insomnia, and anxiety. I know it takes awhile to get used to a new medication, but if your symptoms persist, I would ask your doc for a med switch. I thought six weeks of feeling drugged up was enough and now I am on Lexapro which luckily, does not give me the dizziness, etc. that effexor did. Now the battle is getting through the withdrawls of the effexor.

if you want to continue to work out, you probably won't be able to do it on efxr. i had the same initial response on efxr after working out - i felt like i was going to faint. this faded w/ time and so did the workouts!

Good luck with the withdrawals. I got off of Effexor after 13 weeks and got the shocks coming off of it. The symptoms are a kind of visual related feeling of vertigo or imbalance with a electric shock feeling like hiting your funny bone. When tapering at 75 mg steps per week it was tolerable. I still have mild, infrequent, shocks after three weeks of no Effexor XR, and occasional dizziness. Not bad though. My emotions are more stable now. (Watch out for anger/sadness cycles coming off.)

Did you experience horrible flu-like symptoms such as nausea, headache, tiredness? I have no appetite and have been taking dramamine to try to counteract the nausea. Any other suggestions on how to get through this? I have been at 37.5mg for the past week and want to be off this stuff in the worst way. When you reached this dosage, did you wean down by half during your last week? Also, did you experience insomnia during the withdrawal process and what did you take for that? I have also started lexapro so I am not sure if my symptoms are due to that or the effexor. Sorry about all the questions but I need all the help and support I can get...this is pure hell. Thanks.

I hear you. Yes I had problems with no appetite, I lost a lot of weight. I was very hot all the time and had to sleep without a blanket. I had problems sleeping too, I stayed up to 3 am much of the time and got about 3 hours of sleep each night and then went to work and fell asleep ocassionally at my desk in the afternoon. I did not take anything to help these symptoms. I was so burned out on AD side effects I just decided to suffer through it. Yeah, it is hell! I even had hallucinations. I was speeded too and got agressive. I took Celexa, prior to Effexor, and it did not do much for me. Tapering off of both Celexa and Paxil I had nightmares. With the Effexor I also had shocks. I think the Effexor and Paxil were the worst side effects. In all cases I did not take anything else for the side effects when weaning. Probably the worst side effects of the withdrawal are the severe mood shifts, sobbing, depression, then anger. I found all the ADs caused me to be unstable emotionally. I hope you can get some sleep. Hang in there, 'cause it does get better. The Effexor withdrawal shocks lasted about a month.

Thanks for the advice sleepy lizard. I am still having severe nausea and my pdoc told me to discontinue the Lexapro for a few days to see if that is the culprit . He also said that I was tapering down too fast on the Effexor (I am currently at about 16 mg). Luckily, I haven't had any of the brain zaps that you mentioned. I know it is the effexor withdrawal causing the nausea and I just want to be done with it.

> Sorry, I gained weight on Effexor, felt hot all the time, would sweat with little exertion, sleep problems, took about 3 weeks for the electric shocks in my head to go away, started desyrel and still have dizziness problems, don't know if it is still withdrwal from the effexor or the desyrel. I also take depakote and ambien. I get so sick of taking pills all the time to be 'socially acceptable' but get too sucidal when i don't take the meds. If I skip a few doses of the depakote the my mania returns full force and can get me into all sorts of problems. sometimes I think that i would be better off dead.

I've had those thoughts of being better off dead too. You are not alone on that. You just want some peace of mind! I do meditate and it helps some, but when you are upset it is difficult to do. I'm sorry we suffer so much.
