Please Help Me and the Community

Posted by ryan_s on September 20, 2002, at 12:44:06

September 20, 2002

My name is Ryan and I want to keep this as short as possible. My life is currently in turmoil—I am filing for bankruptcy, I am unemployed, I am on medication for depression, I have had a horrendous childhood, and I have rent due on October 1st, 2002 and, I have a negative balance in my bank account. However, with all of these misfortunes I refuse to quit; I continue to get medical help and a job that will get my life back on track.

I am asking for a dollar donation. For every dollar received, I will donate ten minutes of my time to a local charity. Look at this as an investment into one person’s life and the lives of many others. This letter is out of desperation; is a stepping stone to get my life back on track; and a way to benefit the community. Please help me and send a $1 bill in an envelope and sent it to xxx.

The money is going purely for my rent for the month of October. This is not a joke. You can call the Salvation Army at 312.455.9360 or write them a letter addressed to 105 S Ashland Ave. Chicago, IL 60607 to keep track of my progress. All of the service will be completed by October 1st 2003.

Sincerely,
Ryan

Could this be a scam? Who am I to say. However, note the following posting, only two days ago (9/18), and draw your own conclusions:

Notice especially [6] and the alias of the poster. Hmmm....

Hello.

This is ryan_s and you are right mr. Beev. I did get caught up in a desperate attempt to "get rich quick" in the post that you found on the monster board. However, after posting that message on monster and a few other websites for a day, I decided to try and pay for my rent in a postive way. That being helping out with the community at the Salvation Army. Take this as you will, but I am not trying to scam anyone. All I am trying to do is get on with my life. If you have your doubts email me at xxx and I will answer any of your questions. Thanks for your concern. You also might want to check out some of my posts on Psycho babble for some validity on who I am. This is the truth.

Sincerely,
Ryan

Hello again. This is my last post regarding this subject.

To all of the Skeptics--No one is forcing you to send a dollar. If you have your doubts then do not send me a dollar, but please do not ruin this for the rest of the people that have faith in me. Thank you and Best Regards.

Also email me if you have concerns at xxx and I will prove to you that this is for real.

Perhaps work therapy might be more in order than sitting in front of a computer?

Speaking of which, what ever happened to the concept of three square meals, a good night's sleep and a day of work as a prescription for curing what ails ya?

The policy I cited applies to offering money as well as asking for it, so I'm going to block you from posting for another week. Please also remember not to post anything that is sarcastic or could lead others to feel put down, thanks.

Hi Ryan,

Nice to see you here, but sorry that you have the situation at hand.

I would love to be able to help you, however, I have a concerns with this request, and on top of that, I'm living 'paycheck to paycheck' myself.

What have you tried to cut down on expenses?

You may try turning off the AC or rising the thermostat, getting rid of cable tv/internet access, or lower the package you have.

If you have a car pmt., you could ask them to pay either the principal or interest (can't remember, too long ago), where you are still paying but the cost is lower.

Contact your local utilites, phone, electric, gas, etc., and see if you can apply for a plan where it's estimated on your last 12 months usage.

Contact your landlord and see if they will give you an extension on your rent, or even half pmt.

Have you filed or in the process of applying for disability?

Unfortunately, I'm not in the position of being able to help financially, nor do I feel comfortable sending any kind of personal information to someone I've never met before. I wish you the best of luck.
