Flu Vaccines and Depression???

Posted by optimistic on September 18, 2002, at 13:02:43

Has anybody ever heard of a relationship between the flu vaccine and depression? I was thinking about it and my depression started several years ago which is coincidentally when I started to take the flu vaccine and I have been taking it ever since with continued depression.

Personally I think my depression
was percipitated by a series of
X wrays I had done. Perhaps this
is a little paranoid, but who knows
what can influence the condition, or In
your case influenze the condition.

"coincidentally"

As with all things that are common, like flu shots
and depression, it is hard to draw cause and effect without signifacant proof.

Lots of people drink water and have depression but this does not show cause and effect.

While I am not saying one does not cause the other, the testimony for lots of people has little merit in this case.

Have you considered seasonal affective disorder? » optimistic

Flu vaccines are given in the fall or early winter, which is when SAD typically rears it's ugly head. My depression tends to worsen when the days get shorter, but it occurs even when I don't get the vaccine. What is depressing is actually getting influenza!

Hope this helps,

Chris A.

I agree with all of you. I was just curiuous if anyone had heard of a possible direct relationship. I am hesitant to get the vaccine this year.

I haven't heard of any links, but could be a bit prejudiced due to close links with public health.
Hope you don't get depressed this fall.
