KLONOPIN IS AN EFFECTIVE MOOD STABILIZER

Posted by Hiba on August 17, 2002, at 0:51:00

I was diagnosed anxious depressive ten years ago, and have been experimented with at least ten different antidepressants. All of them did good to elevate my mood, but had their drawbacks also. That is why I tried to get off them every time only to fall in another episode of hellish depression. My doc revealed the fact that I can't stay off medicines and will have to be on them for my entire life. Which makes sense because I know the consequences of coming off medicines. But the real story is ......
My first AD was amitryptiline, then came dothiepin, maprotiline, mianserine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, amitryptiline again, flupenthixol, imipramine, clomipramine, and now fluoxetine. I have been on fluoxetine now for more than a year. Prior to taking this med, I was on clonazepam(Klonopin) 0.5 mg three times a day for almost eighteen months. That is, off antidepressants for one and half years. It is a record in my life. I couldn't stay off antidepressants for more than a couple of months. But I did it with klonopin and those eighteen months were the best in my life. Very Very effectively stabilized. Unfortunately my doc left the place and the new doc (a benzophobic) felt my benzo stabilzation inadequate and arbitrarily changed the med and replaced it with fluoxetine. Fluoxetine does the job but at the expense of my sexuality. This was not the story with klonopin.
So klonopin is not only a mere benzo, it is an effective mood stabilizer also.

about the mood stabilizer part, it hasn't helped very much with my bipolar disorder. But it is excellent for anxiety and the depression that is caused by it (that's a very common combination). I'm sorry your pdoc is messing with your meds, if he won't listen to you firmly saying you want to take the med that worked so well for you, then it's time for a different pdoc. If that can't be arranged, my primary doc has prescribed benzos for me while i looked for a new pdoc, maybe yours can do the same. take care, judy

After never being hospitalized in my life, I started on klonopin and got to see two hospitals in 3 months. Now, I won't say it is -because- of the klonopin, it wasn't. But for me, klonopin is disinhibiting, a little like alcohol. I'm impulsive to begin with (ADD) and so a little disinhibition means I start to act out every stupid idea I have.

Klonopin is a good drug for some people. I found it felt relaxing, and I really liked that aspect. But in retrospect it was the wrong drug for me.

I'm glad it has worked so well for you!

Isn't it funny how different medications work differently on different people? I have never found Klonopin to be in the least disinhibiting. Of course the most I have ever taken at once is 1.5 mg, and seldom more than 1 mg at a time.

However I have experienced disinhibition on SSRI's. I actually cut more often on SSRI's than off. I also did some less serious things like eat pig, which I don't normally do.
