Hello everyone,
I've just moved to Chicago after being overseas for several years and I'm looking to find a good psychopharmacologist. I've been successfully treating my depression with stimulants (Adderall, Provigil) in combination with Wellbutrin, but the various combos are becoming less and less effective. If anyone could respond with any good doctor recommendations, I'd appreciate it.

I happen to know the best most thoughtful and perhaps understanding psychopharmacologist in town. He doesn't do HMO's though and he's pricey strictly private practice, but he knows his shit like no one you've ever met. However You'll have to set up a dummy email address at yahoo or hotmail lest give me your real one, because I cannot in good conscience post it here. He might not like that.
I'm not cured, but I also haven't been forced to gain 40 pounds by some idiot shrink who gets his knowhow from a Blue Cross Blue Shield manual either or a pharma rep either. lemme know..

A great man, but he no longer sees new patients unless you have special connections with Rush. Best you can hope for there is to meet with someone from his group...Unfortunately and unlike him his operation is highly dependent on managed care and pharma rep infiltrated. I got a handful of samples, a bill for $260/45 min, and an incorrect diagnosis. The doc was a good guy, just novice.

Hi there, I'm in Chicago too.
Since I seem to have found a group of Chicagoans here, I was curious. Have you participated in any depression support groups? I moved here three years ago and I still feel isolated, lonely and without friends. I've always had a hard time meeting people, I guess partly the depression, perhaps social anxiety, etc. I thought maybe a support group (live, not internet) might help me with this a bit, though I've heard bad stories about groups as well. Any thoughts?Any suggestions about meeting people in general in Chicago, esp for someone who is depressed, generally quiet and shy, definintely not the bar type? (I know, a tall order!) Perhaps you've had good luck with various activities or social groups of one sort or another here in town. I've tried a few venues but still no luck making any significant contact or friendships. It's probably me and not the venue, but when I'm feeling better I'd like to get out there and give it a try again.
Thanks!

I've always wanted to get involved in the NAMI chapter for bipolar or depressed folks. There are probably many groups. I'd consider starting one too. I am the bar type unfortunately although I'm trtying to stop drinking altogether (been two weeks!) I will probably always frequent bars because all my friends do! However, I have a feeling that in order to be successful at not drinking I will need to develop some additional interests and pastimes.
I'm open to suggestions!

I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and have found a great pyschiatrist in Northbrook. Like Mr. Scott's, he is not on any HMO, but you do get a full 45 minutes with him, and at least in my HMO, I can get them to pay half of these bills, after I pay the yearly deductible.
If you're still looking for a doctor, and Northbrook isn't too far out of the way, I can email you his info.
Good luck!

Ayrity--I've tried meeting other depressed people by putting ads in the Chicago Reader in the "Just Friends" category, but I haven't met much success in doing that. I'm also shy, and not a bar person.

Hi Mr. Scott. I'd love to know the name and number of your dr, and does he see new people?- I have known of drs who get a busy practice then don't allow any new clients.
Please mail me at h_ponczko@hotmail.com
Thanks!
