Effexor to treat/worsening the fibromyalgia ?!

Posted by ben on August 12, 2002, at 12:23:31

I take Effexor 225 mg/d since several weeks for depression and fibro-like pain (no tender/trigger points but aching in the elbows lower legs and arms!) but it doesnt really work well. I guess it pooped out because I had some benefit which vanished again.
Can Effecor make the pain worser ?! Strange question but of substantial worth. I read of treating fibromyalgia successfully with 5-HT3-antagonists (like granisetron, tropisetron, ondasetron) - Remeron belongs to this group too.
My pdoc added Neurontin (3x300 mg/d) which hekped first and then pooped out as well as Effexor. What should I do ? Raising the Effexor instead of my bad sleep ? Raising the Neurontin - probably causes more dizziness or adding Serzone at night ? I can not tolerate Remeron !

You might try adding on a tricylic such as nortiptyline-it's super cheap and has shown some effectivess for fibro. It's nowhere near as sedative as Remeron. Ondansentron, et al, will cost you a fortune and might not help much.

Anything that disturbs my sleep worsens Fibro.. All the SSRI's and Effexor have done so. Perhaps thats because I am probably bipolar.

So far only Trazodone and sinequan have been helpful for my fibro pain, but fibro is not now my greatest issue anymore, and the sinequan has too many side effects including for me. Trazodone may be an option again someday.

Hi Ben,

no chance you're near DC--are you? I saw a pain doc there who seemed very knowledgeable and highly motivated to help. He thinks I have a "fibromyalgia spectrum" disorder. I have chronic pain. For me... he suggested effexor first, which I vetoed. Can't tolerate. His next choices were zanaflex and zonegran, followed by topamax. I have not tried these. I'm doing OK on imipramine for the time being. You might want to check them out. I know zanaflex is an anti-spasmodic. I'm not sure if i'm allowed to name docs on the page. If you are near DC and want his name... I'm at limay@att.net.
