Way around unwanted ssri side effects?

Posted by joeyV on August 10, 2002, at 16:13:57

here's my question:

I understand that Remeron blocks the sites that are responsible for the unwanted side effects associated with ssri's(sexual disfunction, nasea).
If taken concurrently with ssri's will Remeron negate these side effects? Why or why not?

All theoretical and practical input appriciated.

Practical input: It depends on whether you can tolerate Remeron! ;) If you can "stand" Remeron, then you probably wouldn't want an SSRI anyhow-unless there is something very specific about SSRI's that is uniquely helpful for you such as treating OCD or social anxiety. I probably responded the best to Zoloft (of the SSRI's), but it gave me the worst diarrhea and disrupted my sleep tremendously due to restless legs (limb movements, whatever) than any other med I have ever taken. I tried some Remeron with it so I could sleep better, and to calm my guts. I *did* sleep better, and it *did* calm my guts, but I still couldn't stand the zombie fog from the Remeron (high dose, low dose, whatever). Your mileage will vary. It might be worth a try to see if you can tolerate the Remeron.

Theoretically, it seems to make sense. However, I actually did add Remeron to Paxil. I was on the Remeron for many months. The combo helped my depression enormously, but did nothing for the sexual side effects. Plus, I gained A LOT of weight and my appetite soared.
