Lithium advice please

Posted by Squiggles on August 8, 2002, at 18:12:25

I felt really heavy this morning when I got up;
and I overslept, and i had a bad head feeling;
i could hardly move - so i put to the lithium
going up (darn i wish i could get someone to
work with me on a li-detector); I skipped my
2nd dose and feel much lighter and mobile -
so i *think* i am doing the right thing.

I am a long time user - recently i have these
symptoms to which I do not know what drug or
illness to ascribe to. I think it may be the
lithium:

- mucous membranes dry, sneezy, as if i have
sinusitis and very sticky and smell like ammonia
in the morning;

- peripheral neuropathy and esp. recently on the
thumb - could be carpal tunnel;

- but I do fear uremia - i just don't know;

- last check my doc took bloods and did not call
back - so i guess i am ok.

I don't know either, but here (at least) are some clues.

- If you are euthymic (no depression and no mania), your lithium must be in a range of 0.6 to 0.8. My beloved and respected psychiatrist even told me 0.55 to 0.7 (for euthymics for a while).

- Oversleeping may be a symptom of depression and/or too much Lithium.

- Neuropathy and ammonia are "sometimes" symptoms of Lithium's intoxication. Do not play with Lithium, it is a toxic salt.

- Long time user... Well, may be it is just time to switch for something else of simply add an anticonvulsant (Lamictal, etc.) and thus reduce your Lithium dosage.

- At least, do you see a psychiatrist?

- Did you get a complete blood work and not just a lithium test?

May i speak freely without offense? You don't sound happy at all with your treatment and your doctor. Ruminations, fears, bad side effects... May be is it time to change them both? Bring some brillants alternatives?

En espérant t'avoir aider un peu. Bonne chance!
