Ritalin vs Adderal

Posted by tim mayo on July 20, 2002, at 23:34:38

I started Adderal about 2 months ago, after working through dosage and some side effects ive settled in and see a great improvement. only one side effect i cant kick, i have a habit of chewing on my toungue which my pdoc said was a motor tic. i can live with it but wonder if Ritalin might make a difference in anxiety level? i do need to add that i have recently gone thru a job change that requires me to be up at 4:00 am and work long days, having said that i dont mind the other "side" effects from Adderal that i get. they are not huge but i seem to be able to wakeup without much problem after my 1st dose in the morning. i guess im asking, is Ritalin a stimulant? as a recovering alcoholic i know i have an addictive disorder but in no way feel i need Adderal to function during the day for energy but that as a side effect i can live with it. i hope you have followed my rambling, i guess what im asking is in anoyones opinion will ritalin help this motor tic and reduce the stimulation that i recieve from adderal while helping with my many add problems like Adderal has?

I was recently diagnosed with ADD and have been trying the stimulants. I have found that Aderall is much stronger than Ritalin and I got alot of physical side effects from it (shortness of breath, chest heaviness, etc.) I have found that Ritalin is much smoother acting, can't feel the ups and downs like the Aderall. Ritalin did make me a bit jittery at first, but it seemed to pass after a few days. It does help wake me up after I take it in the morning. Not a coffee kind of high, just awake. As far as helping with focusing the Ritalin seems to work the best for me. It's not quite as sedating (zombie!) like the Aderall was. Hope this helps.

Hi Tim,
I took Ritalin for 5 years or so and now take Adderall XR. As far as rebound, feeling low when the dose wears off, Adderall extended release is better as it lasts longer.
I can't really explain the difference, but I liked Ritalin, just had to dose it more often. Ritalin can make you less anxious than Adderall can but a lot of this differs between individuals.
If you go with Ritalin, go name brand only. The time released sucks and a lot of the generics are terrible.
Concerta would be an option as well as Wellbutrin SR. Don't waste your time with Provigil, trust me.

Good luck, Tim. Those looong days can be tough.

If you ever find anything that helps this particular side effect, please let me know. Switching pstims hasn't made much difference.

For me its inner lip-chewing, or sucking sort of...same family of side-effect, I'm sure.
