K versus X

Posted by Squiggles on July 16, 2002, at 19:23:48

Hi Essence,

I am sorry to scare you about clonazepam;
i did not intend to do that, though you are
right imho, that there is a special difficulty
in getting off this drug in comparison to
Xanax. I did get off Xanax too with relatively
short horror at about the same dose.

However, the clonazepam, even at therapeutic
left me with a head seizure/or/stroke or something
which took a month to recover from.

I don't think I quite recovered entirely after
that and that is what i mean by head problems;
that if i don't take my doses back to back i
sense the faint remnants of that really bad
experience - it feels as if there a currents
of vein swellings, and my temperature goes
up - it was much worse - we used to call them
electric eels;

The rise in the dose has helped tremendously.

As i said i do not wish to scare you, because
I was taking the clonazepam for a very long time -
at least 17 years and possibly it just changed
my brain; mind you the Xanax was just about as
long, but it is not as potent, nor an anti-convulsant.

I think the shorter you take it and the smaller
the dose, the better - unless of course my lithium
or bipolar condition has something to do with it,
which i don't imagine it does with you.

All benzos are anti-convulsants. What did your neurologist say about your 'seizure'?- judy

I don't have a neurologist, but i did
ask a private dr. to come to my house,
who ordered an EEG, EMG and spinal x-rays;

I got the test 3 months after the incident
and the dr. told me that it may be too late
to show seizure, but she did not think it
was seizure.

The tests showed normal and the dr. ruled out
carpal tunnel for my peripheral neuropathy.

I'm glad you got such a good work-up and your doc was right, it was too late. I have had several seizures (head injuries and low glucose!) and my EEGs all show normal now. Take care, judy
