My friend has taken Klonopin 1.0 mg for 12+ years and has been in AA for over 20 years without a relapse to alcohol. He also takes 37.5mg of Efexor IR. He was originally diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (when that diagnosis was popular)and his doctor now says he is also a touch bipolar. I personally think he has dysphoric hypomania or some kind of out of control negative energy whatever you want to call it. He is clearly psychologically dependent on the Klonopin, but has never raised the dosage. I'm just posting this because I always hear all or nothing statements posted here, and clearly exception is the rule in some cases.Mr.Scott

thanks for the info, mr. scott. it's valuable for everyone. For me...I'm tring to find out what meds to be on and I'm a bit afraid of benzos, but I am taking into consideration what everyone here says, what I read, and what my docs say.

I'm not advocating benzo's for alcoholics...I'd actually like someone here to post a horror story if they have one to counter mine, but the only story I have on this topic which comes up often on PB has been largely a success story! I know he suffered from anxiety so bad for 8 years in AA, that people avoided the groups he was in because all he ever talked about were the same darn worries. He claims continued benefit...

I joined AA in 1975 and haven't had a drink since. I did take a bad fall on Valium and Dexadrine in 1984 and 1985....clean since then. Benzos have had me scared to death but had to take somethink about a month ago - Klonopin, 0.5mg, currently taking Depakote, Lamictal and will soon restart Prozac. I have been able to start and stop Klonopin at will (no euphoria like Valium, just makes me sleepy). Early to tell how I will do but just could not tolerate anymore insomnia. I like the long half life - can't tell when it wares off and there doesn't seem to be any need for dose increase. Its only my opinion, if you are an alcoholic you need to stop self medicating.....that doesn't mean you should not treat HONEST mood and anxiety disorders. Here's a horror story....some well meaning AAs convinced a new member to stop taking his perscription meds so he would be clean and sober. Five days later he was found hanging from a tree in a local park.
AA is about abuse and recovery, the rest is better left in the hands of a pdoc. Just my experience.Best wishes,
