vitamin e over-sensitivity

Posted by turalizz on July 2, 2002, at 15:15:09

Hi,

My stomach is over-sensitive to vitamin e. Even 100 mg is enough to cause
flatulence, spasms etc.
Any ideas to overcome this situation? Would it be suitable to get it
intravenously once a month or 15 days at high doses?

thanks,

cem

How about just increasing intake of vitamin E rich foods ? A food source of a vitamin is more bio-available than a pill.

Hi Cem,

Oracle is right that natural sources are usually better than taking a supplement for they are easier to digest. Sources include:
cold-pressed vegetable oils, dark green leafy vegies, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Significant quantities are also found in brown rice, cornmeal, eggs, kelp, desiccated liver, milk, oatmeal, organ meats, soybeans, sweet potatoes, watercress, wheat, and wheat germ. Herbs that contain vitamin E include alfalfa, bladderwrack, dandelion, dong quai, flaxseed, nettle, oat straw, raspberry leaf, and rose hips.

It sounds like you are having problems digesting the oil-form. Dry-form of vitamin E is available and easier to digest. I order my supplements from www.vitaminshoppe.com. They carry a 400 IU dry-form d-alpha tocopheryl succinate in a capsule for 13 bucks. Supplemental zinc helps maintain proper levels of vitamin E in the blood. It is suggested that no more than 100 mg of zinc be taken daily. While daily doses under 100 mg enhance the immune response, doses of more than 100 mg can depress the immune system.

Take care, Fuscia
