ANTIDEPRESSANTS WRECKED MY LIFE

Posted by rjk on June 29, 2002, at 12:44:25

I had taken antidepressants without a problem until I combined Remeron with Effexor. This was the biggest mistake of my life. Since then I have had extreme reactions to any medication I have taken and my brain is now so sensitive to drugs that I literally cannot even take paracetamol. I had an EEG test when I first became ill, which was normal. The results of a test I have recently had are abnormal. Without any exaggeration, antidepressnat drugs have left me in a worse condition than I was when I was first prescribed them

That is really sad and it must be so difficult for you. I'm sorry this has happened. Is it possible for you to get off all of the medications? Maybe the effect is not perminant.

so sorry for you. » rjk

That's really terrible. I have heard things like this happen to some people, but the majority of folks don't have such severe, permanent reactions to ADs. I wonder, though, whether meds are capable of wrecking your brain chemistry permanently. It's possible that something else was going on coincidentally. Maybe your illness became more severe. Maybe age had something to do with it.

I had a terrible reaction to an antibiotic. I took three doses and was in excruciating pain and unable to use any of the joints in my body. Even my vision changed. Three doses! It took two months before the effects were gone, and I understand many of those taking Cipro for Anthrax experienced similar problems. The effects can last up to a year.

Please keep an open mind (I know it's tough), especially if you find you must take antidepressants. You could very well return to normal (whatever that is--but normal for you) soon. Maybe some doctors can suggest what else might have affected your EEG.

Good luck.

It's very upsetting to hear this. My heart goes out to you. I think all psychiatric medications should be more closely examined to see the exact effect that they have on the brain.
Due to meds, my memory has gone on me and it used to be perfect. I'd say I'm worse off now than before I started taking meds.
Hopefully your condition is temporary and can be reversed.

A friend in struggle,

Jimmy
