Resperidone - Menstral Problems.

Posted by Red_Robin on June 16, 2002, at 0:25:13

Since I've started taking Resperidone I very rarely have had my period. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if they know of any bad effects that might result from this.

Red Robin,

My wife has the same problem with Risperdal. Most antipsychotics increase prolactin and Risperdal is among the worst offenders. High prolactin causes low estrogen and, in turn, the problems to which you refer.

My wife's endocrinologist told her she had to take estrogen supplements to prevent osteoporosis. He recommended birth control pills for that purpose, which she has been on ever since.

There are other antipsychotics (like Seroquel, Geodon, and Zyprexa) that don't usually raise prolactin, but they can present other risks and side effects.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll put aside my fears and go see the doctor about this. I don't like anything messing with my body to this degree.
