Hi,
Read in an above post, (can't find it now so don't know who to direct this questions directly to) that Klono is a mood stabilizer. I am on Clonazepam (aka Klono) and would like to find information about it's mood stabilizing properties. I am on it for anxiety but have noticed that my moods are much more mellow. Any help would be appreciated.

Klon certainly has this effect on some people (i've noticed it too.) klon is also used in epilepsy, so it has this general trait in common the non-lithium mood stabilizers. but it works on the GABAergic system, so this is different from say lamotrigine or valproate.
but theory is theoretical and life is life.

Most pdocs would consider it a secondary mood stabilizer, and use it as an adjunct to the primary ones- lithium, depakote, now zyprexa. I've found it works very well for me (I am diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder) and after 4 years of trying every mood stabilizer out there, klonopin is the only one I will continue to take. Hope this helps- Judy
P.S. It is the drug of choice in panic disorder, and some theories link epilepsy, bipolar and panic as types of neuronal 'misfirings'.

I'm sorry to hear that John, may I ask what dose you were taking? When you say "poop out" are you referring to mood stabilizing qualities or anti-anxiety ones? It does tend to depress a lot of people, which is a quality shared by most mood stabilizers. Take care, Judy

It's not a mood stabilizer in the definition of that term for psychopharmacology, it is a benzodiazepine "anxiolytic" agent like Valium.

Klonopin is not normally used as a prime mood stabilizer, so the answer would be no. However, Klonopin is used as an adjunctive treatment in bipolar disorder. Since Klonopin is an anticonvulsant first and foremost (it was developed as an anticonvulsant for epilepsy) it has some adjunctive qualities to treat bipolar. But as a prime mood stabilizer? Forget about it.
