Is 30mg Ambien OK???????

Posted by JonW on June 6, 2002, at 0:58:23

What's the max dose? I'm going to ask my doctor, but does anyone know... I can't fall asleep with 10mg or 20mg.

Hi Jon,

I can only tell you that ALL people who overdosed heavily on Ambien (up to 400mg) have survived and recuperated fully, so I think you can go safely to sleep with 30mg-40mg PROVIDED you don't add even a small amount of alcohol or other 'CNS-depressant agents', as my source puts it.

Take a repairing & restoring sleep!

The maximum *recommended* [by the drug company] dose is 10 mg. Quite a few people need 15 or 20, and I've encountered a couple who need 30 or 40. Bear in mind that Ambien might just not be the right sleep aid for you, though.

Try 3 mg Melatonin w/ it or change to 15mg Remeron (nm) » JonW

Hi Elizabeth,

Please allow me to gently desagree with you in that Ambien is not so much a 'sleep aid' as a 'hypnotic drug' indicated for the treatment of insomnia (sole or with whatever 'psychiatric' component). Also I would love to make it clear that there exist 'benzos' which are hypnotic drugs (e.g. Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) -- and it would be less appropriate to call these 'sleep aids' (though some inserts do just that)...

An uncle of mine (now deceased) used oftentimes what we call here a 'wide-awake' coffee as a 'sleep aid' before bedtime... others prefer benadryl as their 'sleep aid' (as does my brother-in-law who is a physician himself) & others still go to the kitchen eat a banana as a sleep aid in the middle of the night (as I myself)...
Alcohol is the nr. 1 'sleep-aid' in the world & I used whisky with soda mixed with hypnotic drugs (barbiturics included -- please don't do it yourself!) during years (I know I was stupid, perhaps 'criminal' all the time [this was more than 20 years ago] but it kept my dose of hypnotics low and it put me to sleep in less than 2 minutes... also I never had either 'rebound insomnia' or 'anterograde amnesia', nor even any noticeable tolerance to any hypnotic drugs...)

I think we all in PB miss your posts.

P.S. Jon, would you please tell us what was your doc's 'hunch' about the 'maximal' dose of Ambien? Just curious... I.

The *maximum* dose for Ambien is supposed to be 10mg. I have had to augment that sometimes when I wake within an hour to two afer getting to sleep by adding 5mg. HOWEVER, I do not think that too many Pdocs (those that even LIKE Ambien, as mine does NOT) would want you to increase it above the prescribed 10mg. I have talked to many who have "upped" their dose, but I would caution you that although Ambien is not *supposed* to be addictive, one does develop at least a psychological dependence on it. Personally, I think Ambien to be a bitter-sweet deal. It will get me to sleep, but it does not keep me asleep, and I am one of those that it makes wake up early. I never get more than 3 hours of straight sleep, even on Ambien w/Tranzene. I have a wake sleep cycle of about 90 minutes after that initial 3 hours (if that!) sleep.

After what has been said in previous posts, did this most smart 'information' come from Ethiopia?
Nope, it came from good old USA, the most backward country in the civilized world with respect to (mis)information on 'benzodiazepines' & 'benzodiazepine-like drugs'. In a new thread below I'm going to speak a little about the last (benzo) 'wonder medicine', namely 'Xanax-XR' by Pharmacia & Upjohn, the recent literature about which disproves any 'ideas' about any tolerance whatsoever induced by 'alprazolam' (tolerance nil at least up to one year continued use in (at least two) clinical experiments). The 'new' maximal recommended dose for the said alprazolam (in its -XR avatar) is 10mg/day, which tells us a lot about the 'value' of the 'previous' maximal recommended dose (which was 4mg/day).

Disclaimer:
(1) of course for 'sensitive' Americans the information available keeps stating that the *maximum* dose of alprazolam-Xanax-Xanax-XR is 4mg/day so beware of the 10mg/day! ('cave ne cadas!').
(2) I confess that I don't personally like Ambien either (I too woke up too early the rare times I used it), but know of people for whom it is an 'invaluable' help in doses double or treble the aforementioned '*maximum* dose' of 10mg...
