I used to work at a retail establishment where drug companies would sometimes host receptions for doctors. Along with punch & cookies, the drug companies would provide large gift certificates from the store for those doctors attending. I never stuck around to hear what the drug reps had to say, but I have a pretty good idea. Boy, they sure would go through hoops trying to avoid leaving a paper trail when paying for those gift certificates.

"Of course, it's going to bias us -- the question is whether the bias is benign," said David McDowell, a Columbia University psychiatrist who helped monitor industry sponsorships for the APA. Without industry money at the gigantic Philadelphia Convention Center, he said, "we'd be sitting in the basement of the YMCA."
The "Y" is 3 blocks up the street, and it's about 15 stories high. Too bad that some of the "industry" didn't visit it, find their way to the *rooftop* and ... you know. :)
