Zyprexa question

Posted by Margit on April 17, 2002, at 22:47:06

I am reading conflicting messages regarding Zyprexa and anticholinergic effects. Many say it doesn't have any, but I looked it up at the RXlist and the say "high affinity to muscarinic receptors (anticholingeric).
Who is right? This is important to me, since I am not supposed to take meds with high anticholinergic effects due to my acid reflux.
Thanks for any responses.
Margit

Hi Margit,

Olanzapine [Zyprexa] has anticholinergic effects according to the prescribing information: "Olanzapine's antagonism of muscarinic M1-5 receptors may explain its anticholinergic effects." Another document I checked lists olanzapine's receptor blockade of M1 as high.

Due to your acid reflux problem, another drug might be better. Risperidone [Risperdal] and ziprasidone [Geodon] have no appreciable affinity for the cholinergic muscarinic receptor.
