Neurontin and trazadone?

Posted by Kelty on April 10, 2002, at 22:20:35

I am diagnosed with major depression but it is somewhat cyclical and I have problems with anxiety.

After doing lots of reading and having intolerable side effects on Effexor, I have decided to ask about combining trazadone and neurontin on my next doc visit. Trazadone is one of the few AD's that I have tolerated and it did me some good while I was on it. I am trying to get off nortriptyline because of major weight gain. I want to try the neurontin because I have had a couple of hypomanic episodes and I need to replace the benefits of nortriptyline in treating fibromyalgia and migraine prophylaxsis. I thought there might be some possible benefits for my atypical depression and my anxiety with this combo.

What do you think?

I say stick with what works..if you tolerated the trazadone, and it worked for you, then go for it. I have taken both meds...trazadone for sleep (at low doses 25mgs-75mgs) and I used Neurontin for epilepsy for about 2 years. I have nothing but positive things to say about both meds.

What dose of trazadone did you take? Why did you stop?

I am a fellow nortryptline taker and am also trying to switch. I am unipolar and the pamelor side effects are harsh. I cannot go above 50 mg or I get so damn dizzy. The dry mouth is also terrible. Can I ask what dose you are taking? I also take 300 mg of lithobid twice daily to boost the AD. They both have weight gain and I need to address that too. Good luck.john

I was taking 100 mg of trazadone along with my nortriptyline, to help with sleep. I stopped taking it during one of my "I don't need all these meds" phases. I thought it might be bothering my stomach, although I've since found out it was probably one of my other meds. I seemed to do not bad on just the nortrip, so I just coasted on it, but losing weight on it has been impossible, so I am going to try something else. Nortrip has not been handling my anxiety anyway, so a change might be good.

Thanks for the input.

john:

I was taking 100 mg of nortrip but I am now down to 75 mg. It took me a long time to work up to 100 with all of those side effects you mentioned, but the only ones that really hung around in the long run were the dry mouth and the weight gain. (I've been taking it about 5 years.) The weight gain has become dangerous to my health, so time to explore more options. (Plus I don't feel the nortrip was doing enough for my anxiety anyway.) My diagnosis is unipolar, although I have recently begun to suspect possble bpII symptoms, but I have not seen a pdoc in years so I should probably find a new one and follow that up.

Thanks for your message and good luck with your struggles.
