New drug cocktails?

Posted by tb on April 9, 2002, at 18:57:05

Hi
I've been dealing with an eating disorder for about 12 years. I have been on almost EVERY combination of anti-depressants that exist.
I've tried Luvox, Serzone, Naltrexone, Remeron, Zoloft, Paxil, Clomipromine. I am currently on Prozac, Wellbutrin and Dexedrine. I have also tried Adderall and Ritalin.
I AM STRUGGLING. I feel that I am completely and totally treatment resistant. I am really struggling with the eating disorder/ocd stuff. The psycho-stimulants do NOT curb my appetite at all.
I don't know what else to try. I am very discouraged. Does anybody out there know of some sort of "cocktail" out there that may help. I'm not looking for a cure, I know that it doesn't exist. I just really want something that will make me feel even a little better.
Thanks
Tb

How about hormones? A shot in the dark here, given I know very very little about eating issues.... but did notice alterations in my appetite and weight on birth control pills.

Good luck.... kate

Hi. I'm not sure which type of eating disorder you have, but it sounds like maybe compulsive overeating? The reason I say that is because your post implies that the stims don't curb your appetite.
Anyway, I can tell you that many, many people suffer from increased appetite, powerful food cravings and weight gain from ADs. I don't care what the stupid leaflets say, in the majority of people, ADs cause weight gain.
I've posted here recently that I just stopped taking ADs and started a trial of Adderall. I have noticed a significant decrease in my cravings. My appetite is still "healthy" but I feel like I'm eating like a "normal" person.. i,e, foods that are nutritious as opposed to satisfying my constant craving for high-carb junk food. Don't get me wrong, I would still love to dive into a carton of Ben & Jerry's but the compulsive desire to do this is virtually gone. I feel like I have a lot more control over what I eat -- no midnight runs to Dunkin Donuts or McDonalds. (I apologize to all of their stockholders.)
Again, everyone is different, and I hope you find what works for you.
Keep posting and let us know how you feel.

Clarification...

Who am I kidding? I don't make midnight runs to fast food places any more.. It's more like mid-morning after I drop the kids off at school, or mid-afternoon (before I pick them up so I don't have to share). Hee hee.

Try it the simple way!

Hey, I understand what you're going through. It's hard to be depressed and to try everything around and still feel like being in the same place or even worse. It's happening to me know. I've tried everythig. I'm on Zoloft + thousands other things now, but NOTHING! I developed my own treatment, I call it the simple way, I found out that my problem is that I can't deal with my probplems, ther's a miss connection between my mind and hearth an my mouth, I know what I feel, I suffer from it, but I can't express it. So, Here's my SIMPLE WAY: WRITE IT... This is what's working for me, I can't say: " I want to kill my self, I hate my self", but, as you have seen, I can write t, so in a way it get's out of me! Try it for a week, if it doesn't work, you can send an "I hate you card" lol

TRy to be calm and write to see how are you dealing with this.

Take care!

Thanks for the input. I suffer from bulimia - I binge and then "purge" through exercise.
Fortunately the ADs don't really make me gain weight... but they don't work for my OCD anymore, at all.
I see my Pdoc tomorrow. I'm going to ask her about Topomax... what do you think?
