Whats normal blood pressure??

Posted by NikkiT2 on February 20, 2002, at 5:39:12

Doc says mine is low, but didn't say any more than that...

When I'm wound it up it is 90/70 and was on 90/60 last week when I had some blood drawn (and nurse couldn;'t get a bloody vein cos of it!!)

What can cause this?? Could it be causing the symptoms of low thyroid I have??

Nikki

Blood pressure is different for all people. I suppose a healthy blood pressure is around 100-110/80-90. At least when I have mine checked it ranges around 100/80 and they say "Blood pressure is excellent!"
When your blood pressure is low you will have fatigue and low energy. I think it can be affected by your thyroid but I am not a doctor.
Perhaps other more intelligent folks on this board can contribute.
*However, I am SURE this thread will be re-directed*

Best wishes to you!

Normal BP readings can vary between healthy individuals. Mine's always around 90-100/70-60. Systolic pressure (when the heart beats) can range from 90-125 & diastolic pressure (when the heart relaxes) ranges from 60-85 or 90.

What's considered borderline low for one person can be perfectly normal for another. Hypothyroidism can cause lowered BP but it's more likely the systolic reading (the first) that's lowered while the diastolic reading (the second) is elevated.

I wouldn't worry about your BP readings at all. Strange your doctor told you it's low 'cause it's considered "low-normal", actually a good thing. I have hypothyroidism but it's treated & I feel fine, & my BP readings stay the same. The only thing I'll notice, & always have, is if I'm bending over from the waist working, I'll get hazy & my head'll spin a bit when I stand up straight quickly. Again, that's considered normal.

If your vein didn't pop up easily, perhaps you were slightly dehydrated? Had you been drinking much liquids before your exam? I always give my right arm for blood tests. I'm strongly right-handed & I think my left-hand veins hide. :-)
At least, they never show up for blood tests.

Hi Nikki,

I agree with everyone else. All "normal" readings are dependent on many things-age, weight, physical condition, etc. I don't believe the difficulty in finding a vein has anything to do with pressure - sometimes veins "roll" when you try to stick them. Dizziness when standing up suddenly is called orthostatic hypotension (SP?-when due to blood pressure change - nothing to worry about unless doc says so). Some drugs cause this dizziness if you stand up quickly. I started Remeron recently and have this dizziness when I stand quickly or move my head side-to-side quickly. This sensation is not related to blood pressure and will subside soon - just a common side effect. Are you taking any meds?
Very best wishes

Geezer
