Ascendin (Amoxapine), Still in Use by Anyone?

Posted by What The Dillio on February 15, 2002, at 17:48:03

I have a prescription for it and am going to start it but I don't know what to expect. What drug is it comparable to as far as side-effects are concerned? Maprotiline? Haloperidol?

Well, give it a shot. But, if you don't like it, there are many very effective tricyclics out there. Imipramine seems to be coming back in, as well as nortriptyline. Both seem good for both anxiety and depression components.

Let us know how you make out.

can cause IRREVERSIBLE tardive diskeneysia

Ascendin unlike many of the other tricyclics has neuroleptic (anti-psychotic) actions. The problem is that Asendine, b/c of its neuroleptic action has sometimes induced IRREVERSIBLE tardive diskenysia (totally uncontrollable, involuntary muscle movements). This side effect has occured in a few patients on low doses for only one month.

So after reading about this possible side effect, I told the psychiatrist I wasn't worth the risk of taking it- I said i'd rather take Remeron since it does the same thing- calms you down & helps you sleep. That pissed him off, he refused to offer any alternative medications (my pharmacist had suggested sinequan as a safer alternative) & he threw me out of the alcohol abuse/major depression program I was in at a large private mental hospital.

I hope you dont take this drug dude. Ascendin is part TCA, part old time typical anti-psychotic...TD city. If you arent schizophrenic I wouldnt touch this drug with a ten foot pole. I saw a lady the other day at my psychiatrist's office who had TD...her tongue was hanging out of her mouth flapping around. Looks terrible.
