Hi-
I've been on Depakote (750 mg) for about 7 years and have had no problems drinking while on it. But of course, everyone is different and you really have to be careful. Start out slow and find your tolerance. I'm not much of a drinker anyway, but years ago I was an animal. I drank ALOT. I really have never noticed a difference while drinking socially on any of my meds. (Wellbutrin, Serzone, Celexa and now Effexor)

Sorry to jump in here, but what is your diagnosis Sarah if you don't mind sharing? I'm guessing BP II from your combo?

> So, what's your experience???Drinking alcohol on depakote is a major no no. Increased drowsiness is the least of your worries. Boozing on depakote increases the chances your liver will flare up on depakote and your liver profile tests will come back screwed up, resulting in you having to stop depakote.

Hi Mr. Scott,
Yep. Bipolar II. Are you as well?

Yes so it seems... I am chronically depressed and then I take AD's which basically make me obnoxious and activated and super negative. They do help a lot for some aspects of my depression like rejection sensitivity and anxiety, but then they also make some things worse. They increase dysphoria and agitation and then of course the side effects on top of it all. So now I'm adding Lithium (450mg)and lamictal(start low & go slow).

Good luck! I would think the Lithium should start helping.

Tina:
Disclaimer "This is MY Experience" --
I have not had a "problem" when I drink on Depakote, unless I drink too much - then I do fall right asleep.
You do have to be concerned about your liver, though, which someone mentions.
Frankly, the only thing I had a lot of trouble drinking with was Topamax - for some reason it mixed horrible with wine and made me really irritiable.

The booze used to make me irritable but since being on the depakote, it actally does it's job and relaxes me. Booze has never done that before and I rather enjoy the sensation. I'm NEVER relaxed. I'm always in a hurry even when I'm doing absolutely nothing. Nervous, anxious etc but the occasional glass of wine is extremely helpful lately.
thanks KK.
the best to you
Tina
