Has anyone heard of, or experienced themselves, becoming more depressed after taking Wellbutrin?

hi, i thought no one would ask.... ;)
im on my 6h day of taking wellbutrin, i dont know how far u are but here goes...... first day psychologically i guess i thought it worked fast for half the day (know what i mean) let me pull out my dairy...
1st day dry mouth, cry at the drop of a hat.....
2nd day feel pretty good but fighting anxiety off n on this includes racing thoughts....
3rd day fighting anxiety all day, slight headache
4th day good morning off n on anxiety thru out the day
5th day nervous agitated had to take 1/2 ativan after ativan kicked in i cried after that felt great (which i posted for some insight)
6th day nervous same as 5th day but didnt take ativan, insides shaking crying jags, slight headache..... racing thoughts showed up all the days but some days longer & worse then others....
to me this makes me depressed, but im full of hope/thoughts that after the initial shock, (what do they say 4wks) that it will help and all the effects will subside............
so to me at this point yes im more depressed but i have to say more anxious then anything........... but i feel what got me to take wellbutin has a big thing to do with the way im feeling.......
how long u taking it?? or is this effect common after u stop taking it????? curious to know... ?

I mentioned this before in previous posts, but when I added Wellbutrin to Prozac I literally flipped out and tried to kill myself... Not scare you because my response seems to be unique..However you did ask.

Tammy,
I found that I was more anxious during the first week on Wellbutrin. For me, the effect wore off by the end of the second week.

Tammy,

This is my second time trying Wellbutrin. I have been on it for about five days now. This time I am taking it as an adjuvant to my Effexor therapy. Last time I tried Wellbutrin was about a year ago. I was a partial responder to the anxiolytic effects of combined Zoloft and Serzone therapy. My sex drive was also nill. My pdoc at the time thought Wellbutrin was a good move. I was weaned off Zoloft over the course of 6 weeks as I increased the dosage of Wellbutrin SR to 200 mg + Xanax 0.5. Two months into my Wellbturin therapy, I was terribly anxious, agitated, and depressed. Some of this I believe was discontinuation sydrome from my stopping Zoloft. A lot of it I believe was anxiety, agitation, and depression that was not being treated effectively (existing endogenously, if you will . . . would have been there with no meds). I have to wonder, though, what part was Wellbutrin playing in all of this.

I did not mean to scare anyone out there. Wellbutrin is a fabulous antidepressant for most people. It has also been used very effectively in people with anxiety disorders (almost never as a first-line therapy . . . usually after other therapies have failed, however).

This is my second go. I am hopeful that my experience will be different this time now that I am on Effexor as well. I am just a bit apprehensive about success, having had the experience that I had a year ago. I started five days ago, and . . . I'm not feeling so hot. I plan to ride these initial feelings out for a few weeks. If however, I don't at least return to the baseline of comfort I had established with Effexor monotherapy in a few more weeks, I will discontinue my use of Wellbutrin.

What other regimens had you tried before Wellbutrin? Is anxiety your primary trouble (led you to initiate Wellbutrin therapy)?

Make sure you report any significant increase in anxiety to your doctor. You don't want to suffer needlessly. You may just need to up the benzo dose. You may need to discontinue the Wellbutrin. The last pdoc I had, made me ride it out way too long. I complained weekly, and he made me stick with it til I left him for another doc (2 mos. later).

I wish you the best of luck.

Are you diagnosed as depressive or bipolar?

I am bipolar. Wellbutrin actually made me extremely agitated, but when I have taken Prozac alone, my depression has worsened. With a stabilizer, such as Depakote, it seems to work well.

I am diagnosed as depressive. I have decided to wait one full week before I make a decision about continuing or discontinuing. I do feel a bit more energetic today, which is why I began taking it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi Krazy Kat,
Did the WB/Depakote combo work for you? Did it make you agitated? or quell anxiety?
Thanks-
Katia
